How To Study For A Clep While Taking Courses
Studying for a CLEP exam is not as easy as some care to think. A CLEP exam can actually be more challenging than a final exam for any given course, and that should be a strong indication as to how much study time needs to be allotted to preparing for a CLEP test. Anyone planning on taking a CLEP test while simultaneously taking other classes needs to have a viable strategy in mind if they hope to pass both their existing classes and their CLEP. Here are some strategies for passing a CLEP while taking other courses:
Study in bursts - You should never study for more than 45 minutes straight without taking a break, even if you are studying for a CLEP while taking other courses. The breaks between your focused study sessions should be relaxing, and it would be a good idea to get the blood moving with a little exercise. Even taking a short walk around the apartment or dorm should be enough to keep oxygen flowing to the brain.
Change things up - If you just spent 30 to 45 minutes studying mathematics, try spending the next session on something else, such as history or art. Try ...
... to keep the sessions as different from one another as possible initially. Using different logic centers in a brain keeps the brain alert and increases retention, which is ideal for anyone studying for a CLEP while taking other courses.
Avoid stimulants - Many students studying for CLEP exams try to cram their body with stimulants in order to study longer. This is actually counterproductive for a few reasons. The first reason that stimulant cramming is counterproductive is that it offsets a healthy sleep cycle, which is required for maximum memory retention. Secondly, the mind tends to recall facts and figures best when it is in the same state as it was when it first recorded them. So, if you try studying while stimulated, you may have better access to that information when you are using stimulants again.
Drink lots of water - The brain works best when the body is properly hydrated. If you are taking on the additional task of studying for CLEP exams while simultaneously taking regular courses, you should stay hydrated for optimal memory retention.
Lighting - Never try to study for the CLEP or a regular course in poor lighting. Poor lighting stresses the eyes, and makes them work far harder than normal. This in turn can lead to a mental burnout. Instead, try ensuring that the study environment is well lit.
Ventilation - Study in well ventilated rooms whenever possible. Stale air does little for the body or the mind, and should avoided by anyone studying for a CLEP regardless of whether or not they are taking other courses.
Don't stress - Passing or failing a CLEP is not the end of the world, so do not succumb to undue levels of stress over it.
Remember that a CLEP test is not designed to be easy, and that it would be wise to study for at least a month before taking a CLEP exam. It may also be a good idea to get CLEP study materials and/or CLEP at-home/preparation tests. If these materials are unavailable, consider using a mini CLEP knowledge to make your own test CLEP exam.
