Exploring The Sights And Sounds Of Ho Chi Minh City

As the economic centre of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling metropolis unlike anywhere else on earth. Culturally diverse, you will find the deeply traditional sitting comfortably alongside the glaringly new. The City is easy to explore on foot, with many top attractions located within District One, including the stunning Notre Dame Cathedral, a must-see in anyones book.
A fun alternative to exploring Ho Chi Minh City on foot is to rent a motorbike. Motorbikes are everywhere in Ho Chi Minh, with many commuters using them to get to and from work. They are incredibly cheap to rent, and while not for the fainthearted, are a truly authentic, and convenient way to get around town.
A fascinating day out can be had at the War Remnant Museum, or the Museum of American Attrocities as it is also known. This title tells you all you need to know about the museum bias, but it is fascinating to see and hear the Vietnamese side of the Vietnam conflict.
A beautiful way to spend the evening is at the Conservatory of Music in Van Hoa Park. Performances take place in the park every Monday and Friday, with performers ranging ...
... from 7 to 16 years of age, with visiting groups performing regularly too.
Many tourists come to Ho Chi Minh City to shop. While there are an extensive array of designer outlets and sprawling malls, the street markets in the city are far more authentic. Ben Thanh Market is one of the largest, and you will find a selection of touristy goods as well as delicious street food, delicious local coffee, clothing and more.
You will find pagodas all over Ho Chi Minh City, but one of the oldest is the Giac Lam Pagoda just outside of Cholon. Dating back to 1744 and restored to its full glory in 1990, the blue and white porcelain work that decorates the outer walls is magnificent, while inside you will find inscriptions in Nam characters, a ancient and incredibly rare form of Vietnamese writing.
The Reunification Palace is a very popular stop off for tourists and it is impossible to miss on your visit. Looming large over the city, this was once the home of the Viet Kong leader who gave Ho Chi Minh its name.
For an introduction to the wonders of Vietnamese art, a trip to the Duc Minh Art Gallery is a must. From Le Duc Hai and Le Ngoc Thanh to Hoai Huong and Vu Thang, this is a great way to learn about the greatest artists Vietnam has ever produced. Our guide to the must see attractions of Ho Chi Minh City was written by Bonny Kominek, a frequent Vietnam visitor.
