Jamaica has 14 parishes in total, and Montego Bay is the capital of one of them, St. James Parish. Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica, which was discovered in 1494 by Christopher Columbus. On his arrival he called it Fair Weather Bay, and it remains part of the British Commonwealth.

Climb alongside the beautiful waterfalls of Dunns River, and take a swim with the local dolphins on a trip to Ocho Rios. Travel agents and local tour operators arrange day trips to this popular Montego Bay destination, where there are also plenty of independent shops and stalls selling food, local crafts, clothing and more.

Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville - located on Gloucester Avenue, this is a restaurant with a difference. As well as serving up delicious traditional Jamaican dishes, there is also a 110 foot waterslide down to the beach, as well as evening entertainment and a hot tub too.

Croydon on the Mountains is a working coffee and pineapple plantation located in the Catadupa Mountains. With breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside, you can tour the plantation sampling exotic fruits and fruit juices ...
... and enjoy a barbecued lunch too.

A wealth of equestrian activities is available at the Rocky Point Stables at Half Moon. As well as riding lessons, the Stables organise exciting trail rides that let you explore the countryside on horseback, including swimming with your horse as part of a beach ride. There are polo games, horse jumping lessons and carriage rides too.

Head to Rock, just outside of Falmouth, for an evening that you will never forget. At the Luminous Lagoon, you can take an evening swim while the phosphorescence around you means that the waters glow as you move through it. Fish around you are easy to spot and are illuminated too.

The Centerstage Theatre - situated at Dominica Drive in New Kingston, the whole family can enjoy an evening of fun entertainment here. As well as music gigs and theatre productions, there are also regular musical performances in patois too.

Montego Bay has several beaches to choose from, all with fantastic facilities. Among the most popular are Doctors Cave Beach at Gloucester Ave, Cornwall Beach and Walter Fletch Beach. You can rent sunloungers and umbrellas at each beach very cheaply, and there are snorkelling, swimming, boating and beach activities at each of them too. Our guide to fun activities and attractions in and around Montego Bay was written by Bonny Kominek, an experienced travel agent. They recommend checking the Octopus Travel website for the latest Montego Bay hotels deals.
