8 Secrets To Amazing Wedding Photography
Planning your wedding is full of excitement, and one of the most important elements of your day will be capturing those unforgettable moments. With my experience as a wedding photographer, I’ve learned a few things that often go unsaid but are crucial to having stunning wedding photos. Here are eight tips that every couple should know to ensure their wedding photos turn out beautifully.
1. Building a relationship with your photographer Is Key
Your connection with your photographer can have a significant impact on how your photos turn out. You’re inviting them into some of the most intimate moments of your life, so feeling comfortable around them is important. Think about it like this: if you’d enjoy grabbing a coffee with your photographer, you’ll likely be more at ease when they’re taking your photos. This comfort shows up in the images, making them look more natural and genuine. Also, your guests will sense the trust you have in your photographer, making ...
... everyone more relaxed, which leads to authentic, candid moments being captured.
2. Don’t feel pressured to always look at the camera
We’ve all grown up thinking that whenever a camera appears, we need to look directly at it and smile. But this isn't necessary for your wedding photos. In fact, some of the best images are taken when you’re simply enjoying your day, not worrying about posing. Of course, there will be times when we’ll get those classic group shots or portraits, but the moments that stand out the most are often the ones where you’re in the moment, not paying attention to the camera. Trust me, these natural photos will be the ones you cherish for years to come.
3. Share your wedding excitement with your photographer
Getting excited about your wedding is totally normal, and I love it when couples share their enthusiasm with me! Whether it’s finding the perfect dress, choosing your flowers, or organizing your décor, sharing these details with your photographer helps build a stronger connection. Even though I’m not a wedding planner, I enjoy hearing about your plans and it helps me get a better sense of what matters most to you. This excitement and openness can lead to even better photos because I’ll know what’s important to capture on your big day.
4. Choosing a photographer Is about more than the price
While budget is always a factor in wedding planning, it shouldn’t be the only thing you consider when selecting your photographer. You’ll be spending a lot of time with them on your wedding day, so it’s crucial to choose someone whose style you love and who you feel comfortable with. After the day is over, your photos will be one of the few things left to remember all those special moments. So, take the time to find someone whose personality and work resonate with you, not just someone who fits your budget.
5. Wedding photos are not just for the wedding day
Your wedding photos aren’t just for now—they’re for the future too. These images will become family heirlooms, something you and your loved ones will look back on at reunions, anniversaries, and other special occasions. They’ll remind you of the people who were there to celebrate with you, some of whom may no longer be around. So, when choosing a photographer, remember that these pictures will be part of your family’s history for years to come.
6. It’s okay If your dress gets a little dirty
Here’s the thing: your wedding dress will probably get dirty at some point, and that’s okay. Whether it’s the train dragging on the ground or a bit of dust from your outdoor photos, it’s part of the day. Don’t let it stress you out. The most important thing is to enjoy your day, not obsess over keeping everything spotless. I’ll be there to help avoid major messes and will pick off any stray leaves or dirt, but try to embrace it—it’s just a sign that you’re having a great time.
7. Be prepared for any weather
Weather is unpredictable, and while you may not want to think about rain or extreme temperatures, it’s essential to be prepared. Whether it’s an umbrella for rain, extra layers for the cold, or fans for the heat, having a weather plan will help you stay comfortable and keep the day running smoothly. If you have a wedding planner, they can help with these details, but if not, take a few moments to think about how to handle different weather conditions in advance. No matter what the weather throws at us, we’ll still get amazing photos.
8. You don’t need a long-shot list
Trusting your photographer is key, which means you don’t need to hand over a long shot list filled with ideas from Pinterest or Google. An experienced wedding photographer already knows the essential shots—like the first kiss, exchanging rings, and the wedding party laughing. Instead of focusing on a list, talk with your photographer about the moments and people that are most important to you. If there’s something unique happening at your wedding, like a surprise gift for someone, mention it beforehand, and I’ll make sure to capture it.
