To own a car is not enough. It is important to learn car repairs and be confident of not just knowing if you can do it but when you can do it. This would include car body repairs if need be. It will save you paying your mechanic, who might be trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. But if you are familiar with your car, its parts, their workings and basic troubleshooting, then you can save yourself a lot of money and a headache.
Remember that your mechanic is a businessman and though most are honest, there are a few who will try to take advantage of you if you are clueless when it comes to car repairs. He would surely try to take advantage of your ignorance and sell more than is required. He may also keep the car for more time than necessary, thus giving him a good reason to double charge you for the labour.
There are certain basic things that you can do  like changing your car tyres. That is something that anyone driving a car must know. Then changing air filters, cleaning the battery terminal and checking oil.
The ...
... term ‘mechanic' has been replaced by ‘technician' for those dealing with car body repairs. They are not your regular under the tree shade mechanics with no knowledge of the complex computer and electronic system of the cars. These technicians receive extensive training and special tools to give your car just what it needs. They are taught panel beating, spray painting, alloy wheel repairing , and doing interiors among other things. While minor car body repairs can be taken care of at home, it is best handed over to the experts who have been trained for this for the more complex jobs.
Alloy wheels are made from an alloy of aluminium or magnesium and are also known as rims. They are light and improve the looks of the car but are not corrosion or scratch resistant. Alloy wheel repairs are more difficult than steel wheel repairs. Though alloy wheels are more expensive, of late they have become more common and are preferred to steel wheels. Alloy wheels are preferred because car owners believe that these lighter, visually larger wheels on their cars result in increased performance, handling and suspension.
