Amazon Goes Nuclear With Its Carbon-free Energy Efforts
In a series of recent announcements, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have shown a strong commitment to nuclear energy as a sustainable solution for their growing power needs. Microsoft took a notable step by partnering with Constellation Energy Corporation on a 20-year power purchase agreement to restart Unit 1 of the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant. This move is not about reviving the decommissioned Unit 2, which had a partial meltdown in 1979, but rather about reigniting the adjacent Unit 1, which ceased operations in 2019 due to economic factors. The aim is to generate clean, carbon-free energy to support the power-hungry demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) technologies.
Shortly after Microsoft's announcement, Google made waves by revealing a landmark deal to purchase nuclear energy from small modular reactors (SMRs) developed by Kairos Power. As the world’s first corporate agreement of this nature, it signifies Google’s continued efforts to integrate clean energy sources into its operations. SMRs offer advantages like a smaller footprint and quicker deployment, making them a strategic ...

Amazon entered the nuclear energy space with a trio of deals. The first, in partnership with Energy Northwest, focuses on building SMRs in Washington state, initially capable of producing 320 megawatts (MW) with a potential expansion to 960 MW. This could power up to 770,000 homes. Amazon also invested in X-energy, aiming to bring more than 5 gigawatts of SMR-based power online in the U.S. by 2039. Additionally, Amazon's collaboration with Dominion Energy in Virginia seeks to explore SMR development near the North Anna nuclear power station.
These initiatives reflect a larger trend of tech companies turning to nuclear energy to achieve their environmental goals. Amazon’s investments align with its broader ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a milestone it is on track to achieve after reaching 100% renewable energy across its facilities seven years ahead of schedule. AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the critical role nuclear energy plays in scaling clean energy to meet future demands, especially as AI and data centers require more power.
As Microsoft, Google, and Amazon embrace nuclear energy, other tech firms may follow their lead, recognizing the potential of SMRs and other advanced nuclear technologies. The shift towards nuclear power comes as companies seek more reliable and low-carbon energy sources, especially in light of the increasing power demands of modern technology. This trend could reshape the energy strategies of major tech players, fostering a new wave of clean energy adoption across the industry.
Nuclear energy’s role in powering AI and digital infrastructure could have a transformative impact, enabling tech companies to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels while ensuring consistent energy supply. The tech industry’s embrace of nuclear solutions like SMRs may pave the way for a broader transition to carbon-free energy, driving innovation in the energy sector and contributing to global climate goals. By pioneering this shift, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are positioning themselves as leaders in the sustainable energy revolution.
