Boy Wonder Shi Yu Qi's Journey to becoming a Badminton Champion

Born on 28 February 1996, in Nantong City of Jiangsu Province, Shi Yu Qi started playing badminton at age six. From 2007 to 2009, he shifted his base to Singapore to focus on badminton. His coach, Zhang Qing Song, was ex-SBA chief coach, who helped him understand the nitty-gritty of the game.

By 2011, he was winning the district badminton competition and started his journey as a professional player. He won the National Youth Championship in 2012 on his first attempt. In the same year, his team came second at the Asian Junior Championships. The next year, he secured a gold in the mixed team event and made his international debut as a senior player.

In 2014, he won mixed team and boys' singles titles at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships. He also won a gold in the mixed team event at the World Junior Championships. His win at the Youth Olympic Games, made people notice his skills on the international level.

After an uneventful 2015, Shi Yu Qi improved his form to win the Indonesia Masters 2016 and French Open 2016. His team won a bronze at the 2017

Asia Mixed Team Championships. He entered the semi-finals and finals of several important tournaments, however, missed out on winning a title.

2018 proved to be his best season to date, making him a player to watch out for in the coming years. His team won a silver medal in the Asia Team Championships. He won his first All England Open Badminton Championships, World Championship, and Thomas Cup against badminton legends. He won second place at the World Championships 2018 and the French Open.

He won the Swiss Open 2019 and earned a silver medal in the Asian Championships. His team won a gold medal at the Sudirman Cup mixed team event. In 2021, his team defended the Sudirman Cup title. In the 2020 Thomas Cup, held in October 2021, Shi cited bizarre reasons to retreat after losing the first set to Kento Momota. This behavior led to a ban on Shi Yu Qi, thus barring him from playing international games for one year.

When he returned in 2022, he won the Denmark Open and Australian Open titles. His team won the Sudirman Cup that year and also ensured a win at the postponed 2022 Asian Games. Owing to his incredible performance at multiple tournaments, Shi qualified for the World Tour Finals and won a silver by losing the game to Axelsen.

In 2024, Shi Yu Qi won a silver at the Malaysia Open and reached world number 2 in the BWF rankings. He even helped China win the Thomas Cup. He won the India Open, French Open, Singapore Open, and Indonesia Open. Following his victory in Indonesia, he became the top player in the BWF rankings, dethroning Viktor Axelsen.

What is the Playing Style of Shi Yu Qi?

Shi Yu Qi started as an aggressive player with good spin shots and strong cross-smashes. Because of his high-quality attacking game, he defeated several top-seeded players and became a formidable opponent for many. However, he used to struggle against experienced players like Lee Chong Wei and Kento Momota.

After several injuries, he switched to a more controlled-oriented game and adjusted his attacking style. Nowadays, he does not display excessive speed or power, instead focusing on control. He is getting increasingly good at keeping the momentum and playing long rallies comfortably.

Shi Yu Qi’s Favorite Badminton Gear!

Shi Yu Qi’s preferred badminton equipment includes the attacking racket: Yonex Astrox 100ZZ. With a more precise weight distribution than other head-heavy rackets, the Astrox 100ZZ racket ensures increased power without compromising speed. It produces more flex, delivering more responsiveness to Shi’s shots. He uses the BG80 Power strings for a solid feel, especially when hitting power-packed smashes.

Shi Yu Qi's ascent to World #1 represents more than just athletic achievement—it showcases the evolution of a player who has successfully adapted his style to meet the demands of the game. From his early aggressive style to his current controlled approach, Shi's journey demonstrates the importance of versatility and resilience in professional sports.
