The rising energy consumption of AI technologies has become a pressing concern. As AI and generative AI reshape industries by streamlining operations, boosting productivity, and reducing costs, they have also led to a surge in energy demands. This partnership includes reviving the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant's Unit 2, which has been inactive since 2019. While TMI's Unit 1 remains decommissioned following a partial meltdown in 1979, this move aims to generate around 835 megawatts of carbon-free energy, contributing to the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) grid.

The deal is expected to supply up to 500 MW of round-the-clock, carbon-free power to U.S. electricity grids by 2030, with additional reactors planned by 2035. This initiative complements Google’s ongoing efforts in solar and wind energy, as the company strives toward its ambitious 24/7 carbon-free energy and net-zero targets.

The leadership shown by companies like Google and Microsoft in adopting clean nuclear energy could inspire other tech firms to pursue similar solutions. As more companies prioritize sustainability, the broader tech industry may shift toward greener, more energy-efficient operations.
