Introduction

A magnetic resonance imaging scan uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to generate clearer and more elaborate images of the internal body structure. An MRI scan is widely used to detect injuries, tumors, and certain heart issues. Unlike other scanners like CT scans and X-rays, an MRI is known to be safe because it does not use radiation.
.
What is an MRI?

MRI uses tube-shaped magnets which create a magnetic field that aligns the protons found in the tissue’s water molecules. The radio waves emitted by the machine then prepare 3d images. The images appear cross-sectional which allows the doctors to determine the condition of the organ or tissue.

What is an MRI with contrast?

Your doctor may suggest an MRI with contrast. In this procedure, you will be given a contrast agent or dye intravenously, before the scan. This agent usually consists of a metal called gadolinium. In the body, the contrast agents aid in accelerating proton activity to produce images that are brighter and more distinct.

Why do healthcare providers use MRI scan?

The MRI scan ...
... is not helpful to detect broken bones as they do not contain much water. Healthcare professionals use MRI scans to determine abnormalities of the organs or soft tissues. This scan helps to detect various conditions throughout the body.

MRI of the heart helps detect:

Brain injury
Tumour of the brain and spine
Stroke
Brain aneurysm
Multiple sclerosis
Pinched nerves
Eye or ear issues

MRI of the cardiovascular system helps determine:

The anatomical structure of the heart
Congenital heart disease
Blockage
Function of the heart
Infection, tumor or inflammation
Damage from the heart attack

Other uses of MRI include:

Detects tumors or cancer throughout the body
Determines issues with brain, heart, lungs, and digestive system
Detects injuries in the ligaments, tendons, and muscles
Detect joint injury or disease

What happens during an MRI scan?

After reaching your health center, you will be given a gown to change. You are required to remove any jewellery from your body. Then you need to lie down on a scanning table, then will be moved to teh MRI machine. The scanning process may take 20-90 minutes depending on the part of the body being scanned. During the process, you may hear a beeping sound emitting from the machine.

Conclusion

MRI scan is widely used in diagnostic procedures to detect soft tissue injuries and abnormalities of the organs. This scan is not used to detect bone injuries. MRI scan is considered a safe scanning procedure as it does not use radiation. Also, if you are fearful of the close or compact setting of an MRI machine, talk with your doctor to determine whether you can opt for an open MRI.
