Understanding distractions during online classes

A distraction is essentially anything that removes focus from any task at hand. It doesn't have to completely steal attention because even minor interruptions can reduce concentration. For instance, your child may be listening to a lecture on the laptop but might also be playing a game on their mobile phone. •Identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Different people get distracted in different ways. What helps another student concentrate may be distracting to your child. For instance, your child may prefer to doodle while listening to a lecture to boost their concentration. The key is to work with your child to identify things that can distract them.

• Dedicate the right time for study

Most online classes occur in an asynchronous setting that gives students more freedom to do readings or answer mock tests anytime as long as they meet their deadlines. However, this can be problematic if your child doesn’t synchronize their schedule and they multi-task. You can avoid this by working with the tutor to set an appropriate time for dedicated learning.

• Mind the location

Avoid allowing your child to study in bed or in common areas where they might be easily interrupted. Instead, create a designated study space that is free from distractions.
