Ddos Attack And Data Breach Affects 31 Million Internet Archive Users

The recent cyberattacks on the Internet Archive have served as a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of platforms that store vast amounts of sensitive user data. Founded in 1996 as a non-profit digital library, the Internet Archive provides free access to a wide range of digitized content. Yet, in the past two weeks, it became the target of a data breach affecting over 31 million users, along with a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
The data breach resulted in the exposure of authentication information, including email addresses, hashed passwords, and other user details. Visitors to the site were met with a pop-up alert stating: "Have you ever felt like the Internet Archive runs on sticks and is constantly on the verge of suffering a catastrophic security breach? It just happened. See 31 million of you on HIBP!” This refers to the platform "Have I Been Pwned," a service that allows individuals to check if their personal data has been involved in breaches.
Although the breach only came to light on October 9, 2024, the incident reportedly took place on or before September 30, when Troy Hunt, creator ...
... of Have I Been Pwned, was first notified. Hunt also confirmed that a large portion of the exposed data had already been compromised in previous breaches.
In a troubling twist, the Internet Archive also fell victim to a DDoS attack orchestrated by the hacktivist group BlackMeta. The group, driven by political motivations, criticized the Archive for its perceived role in U.S. geopolitical dynamics, issuing threats and taking down the website for hours.
Given the scale of the attacks, the question arises: Should websites that store personal data be held to higher cybersecurity standards? As the frequency and complexity of cyberattacks increase, stronger cybersecurity measures are not just desirable—they are necessary. Platforms like the Internet Archive must prioritize user data protection, or risk losing the trust of the millions who rely on their services.
