Over A Dozen State Attorneys General Sue Tiktok For Harming The Mental Health Of Kids
Social media has become a central part of modern life, but its effects on children, particularly their mental health, have raised significant concerns. Recently, Attorneys General from 14 states, led by New York’s Letitia James and California’s Rob Bonta, filed lawsuits against TikTok, accusing the platform of fostering addiction among children and contributing to widespread mental health issues. The lawsuits claim that TikTok promotes harmful features such as autoplay videos and beauty filters, which keep children engaged for long periods, often exposing them to dangerous viral challenges that have led to injuries and deaths.
Additionally, the lawsuits argue that TikTok violates the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by inadequately protecting the data of users under 13, a demographic the platform allegedly profits from. TikTok, however, denies these claims, asserting that it has made substantial efforts to protect its young users and consistently updates its safety features.
New York Attorney General Letitia James emphasizes that social media platforms like TikTok play a significant role in ...
... the mental health struggles faced by today’s youth. She believes that addictive features on these platforms are exacerbating anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem among children. California Attorney General Rob Bonta agrees, stating that TikTok’s business model relies on keeping children engaged with addictive content, which harms their mental health and emotional well-being.
This legal action follows a similar lawsuit against Meta, which was accused of intentionally designing its platforms to be addictive to children. Both cases highlight the need for greater accountability from social media companies to protect young users.
However, some argue that parents should take more responsibility for managing their children’s screen time and online activities. Should the legal focus remain on social media platforms, or should parents play a larger role in protecting their children from the dangers of social media addiction?
