The requirements in clause 6.1 of the Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS) of SO 45001:2018 state that you must identify risks, opportunities, and hazards to plan for them. However, these requirements can be very unclear. The foundational requirements of the standard will be covered in this article.

The OHAS Awareness Training Online aims to equip safety officers with fundamental OSHA concepts and principles through auditor, lead, implementer, and awareness training. It provides updated knowledge on ISO 45001, HSE, and IMS standards, and tools to fulfil auditor duties in an organization.

The Explanation of ISO 45001 Hazards, Risks, and Opportunities
 Hazard Identification: To examine the processes and identify the threats.
 Risk Assessment: Determine which risks, including OH&S risks, are directly related to your hazards by conducting a risk assessment.
 Opportunities Assessment: Find OH&S opportunities as well as other opportunities that are directly relevant to improving your OH&S performance by doing an opportunity assessment.
 Organizing: ...
... Organizing involves making plans for how to handle various risks and possibilities, comply with legal obligations, and prepare for any emergencies that may arise.

What Do You Mean by Hazard Identification?
Section 6.1.1 of ISO 45001 provides an overview of process, including advice on considering important stakeholders, internal and external challenges and the extent of your OH&S management system, while conducting a risk assessment. Next, the management system’s hazards must be identified by clause 6.1.2.1. This means that you have to examine each of your processes to find any potential risks that could result in worker injury or illness. Not only are routine tasks like maintenance and crises that can arise taken into account, but planned modifications, non-routine tasks like these, and human variables that could endanger the process are also taken into account. After you have determined all of your risks, you go on to the assessment phase.

What are Risks and Opportunities in ISO 45001 Standard?
After assessing your hazards, you must determine the OH&S risks as well as other risks for the health and safety management system, per clause 6.1.2.2. The risks associated with occupational health and safety are those that are directly tied to your dangers; for instance, operating a machine with a sharp edge carries the possibility of someone cutting themself. You identify additional risks in addition to these OH&S risks that could impact your management system but are not directly related to hazards. For example, you might need to locate a new supplier if the one you are using stops providing a safe cleaning chemical.

Following that, you have to find OH&S opportunities and other opportunities for the OH&S management system in line with paragraph 6.1.2.3. Opportunities for occupational health and safety are those that are directly tied to enhancing your performance in OH&S, including altering your work practices to reduce the risk of injury or getting rid of hazards at work. High-level possibilities that might affect the system as a whole but are not directly tied to dangers are known as opportunities. Examples of these include finding a new technology that can increase worker safety or a supplier creating a better material to replace the one you now use.

How Do You Recognize Chances and Hazards?
As stated earlier, OH& S risk and opportunities are found by evaluating the dangers you have identified, figuring out what threats they provide, and seeing whether there is anything you can do to modify your work to make it safer. A group of individuals who comprehend the process in issue and the risks associated with it may see the potential drawbacks and chances for improvements that could make the process safer.
However, actions related to top management strategy planning usually identify additional risks and possibilities for the OHSMS. This level allows for a more thorough evaluation of suggested improvements and bigger dangers. Many businesses will employ a method known as a SWOT analysis, which examines the organization's potential threats, opportunities, weaknesses, and strengths to systematically analyse the situation and determine whether further action is required.

Which Risks and Opportunities Should an OHSMS Typically Address?
Every company has a different approach to risk assessment, and the typical OH&S risks and opportunities change based on the existence of hazards. Trip hazards, sharp edges, and equipment pinch points are examples of common hazards. Chemicals, on the other hand, can pose specific risks based on the type of chemical utilized. Each firm has different risks and possibilities for the OH&S management system, but common causes include modifications to suppliers' products, new technological advancements, or evolving understanding of procedures and hazards. These possibilities and hazards might differ amongst firms and are impacted by several different factors.
