How To Wear The Military Trend
The military trend has been with us for a couple of years now, but tended to have a more flamboyant 80s edge. 2010 sees designers still looking to military wear for inspiration, but this time looking back to military wear from the early part of the twentieth century.
The look of First and Second World War uniforms is a far cry from some of the military-inspired menswear we have seen in recent years. Far more austere and functional, think more muted shades and cleaner cuts, to give a subtler overall look.
One aspect of military wear that is going to be big this season is the aviator style. As well as the ubiquitous aviator shade, the aviator jacket is a must-have for the autumn and winter seasons. This is a flattering bomber style jacket, cinched in at the waist, with a large collar, preferably in Shearling.
An absolute must-have if you want to pull this look off is the perfect military-inspired coat. Army green, RAF blue and navy are the colours to aim for. Look for brass buttons and shoulder epaulettes too. You can wear it single or double-breasted, with a double-breasted coat creating a more dramatic look, ...
... belted or unbelted, it is up to you.
As for footwear, aviator boots are a must. These look great with jeans or formal wear and make a dramatic fashion statement. Look for boots with Shearling cuffs for that authentic aviator look, and if you can find an authentic vintage pair that is even better.
A whole range of designers and high street stores are giving a modern twist to early period military wear this season. However, there are also plenty of vintage shops and websites where you can source truly authentic military wear. Nothing beats the real thing, and if you cannot find something to fit, aim for a larger size and take it to your tailor for alteration.
With the military look, the key is not to overdo it. You do not need to look like you are heading off to the Somme or fighting side by side with the Red Baron. The great thing about military wear is its functionality, which means that it is easy to wear. Just add touches by throwing on your military coat, a khaki shirt with epaulettes, or your trusty aviator boots.
To keep this look authentic, think about your hair too. Look to old military photographs for inspiration. The hair needs to be kept neat, ideally with a sharp side parting. The right hairstyle can add real impact to your overall look, and this classic hairstyle suits almost everybody, helping to slim the face, helping to make you look more youthful too. Our guide to wearing the must-have military trend this season was written by Barton Loi, a professional stylist.
