Supreme Court Orders Independent Investigation Into Tirupati Laddu Controversy

The Supreme Court announced on Friday that it will launch an investigation into the Tirupati Laddu controversy, assigning the task to an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT). The director of the CBI will oversee this investigation.

The court stated that the SIT will consist of two members from the CBI, two from the state government, and one representative from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which is the leading authority in food testing.

Emphasising that this issue is deeply rooted in the faith of millions, the Supreme Court expressed its desire to prevent the matter from becoming a "political drama."

The court believes that an independent body will foster public confidence in the investigation.

Previously, an SIT set up by the Andhra Pradesh government had to pause its investigation because the matter was pending in the Supreme Court.

The bench, led by Justice BR Gavai, clarified that their order does not question the integrity of the Andhra Pradesh SIT members.

... General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that if any truth exists in the allegations, it is completely unacceptable.

He proposed that the SIT's investigation could be supervised by a senior official from the central government.
