Summer is here. Temperatures have been soaring, the sun has been shining and correspondingly, hemlines have been rising. Summer fashion is embracing this heat and keeping cool in floaty fabrics and nude colours. So what''s hot to trot?

Ruffles, frills, layers and bows; anything that feels good, looks good too. This is a trend that will carry on into autumn and winter too, so an investment now can be worn for the rest of 2010.

Animal prints are still a top trend to adopt this year. However, for summer they have come over all cool, calm and collected. Muted hues of greys, steel blues and mauve are the winning combination.

Shape wise, tube, cocoon and even pencil skirts are the top picks. High waisted is also a must as is the look of the year, body con. Basically, every skirt this summer is made to highlight the natural curves of a woman''s figure.

Quite rightly, nautical is doing swimmingly this summer. It is effortlessly chic and stylish, yet casual and comfortable.

Polka dots are a popular choice for evenings. They work just as well with a rocker t-shirt as they do with a silk nightwear-as-outerwear ...
... styled top.

Belted and bowed is another way to add detail to an otherwise plain, dark tube or pencil skirt. Studs too can add a bit of edge that can change the look of the outfit entirely.

Another big trend that is flowing right through the fashion world, and has been since 2009, is floral. Floaty fabrics combine with highly patterned floral motifs. The fits are still figure hugging and are therefore womanly, but are girly and feminine without being too obvious.

It is this new-found femininity that is making summer fashion so appealing this year. With all these luxe materials and floral fabrics, women don''t need to try hard to feel girly and womanly. You can ditch those sky-high heels for a day and feel just as sensual in flats. Forget full on make-up and relax in sunglasses and plaits, and nothing says ''hello sailor'' quite like nautical and it works well with white pumps a plain t-shirt and blazer.

Also, skirts aren''t just for summer, all of this season''s skirts look just as hot when the temperatures cool and the evenings shorten. Summer doesn''t have to end in August. Barton Loi is a fashion journalist and freelance writer. They recommend New Look for skirts.
