Porcelain items are ceramic products made from a specific type of clay that is fired at very high temperatures. This process creates a hard, white, translucent material. Porcelain is known for its smooth, glass-like finish and is often used for fine tableware, decorative objects, and tiles.

It originated in China and has been highly prized for its durability and aesthetic qualities. Some common examples include porcelain dishes, vases, and figurines. These items are ideal for corporate gifts in Sri Lanka, as well as for highly personal offerings like gifts for wedding couples in Sri Lanka. They also make the best housewarming gifts, as you can find very useful items for a home in porcelain.

Porcelain items are made through a detailed process involving several key steps:
• Preparation of Clay: A mixture of kaolin (a type of white clay), feldspar, and quartz is prepared. This blend gives porcelain its characteristic strength and translucency.
• Shaping: The clay mixture is shaped into the desired form using techniques like moulding, wheel throwing, or hand-building.
• Drying: The shaped items ...
... are left to dry slowly to remove moisture, preventing cracking during firing.
• Bisque Firing: The dried items are fired in a kiln at a high temperature (around 1,000 to 1,300°C or 1,800 to 2,400°F) to harden them into a porous state known as bisque ware.
• Glazing: A layer of glaze (a glassy coating) is applied to the bisque ware. This glaze is often a mixture of minerals and chemicals that melts during firing to create a smooth, glass-like finish.
• Glaze Firing: The glazed items are fired again at a higher temperature (around 1,200 to 1,400°C or 2,200 to 2,600°F). This final firing vitrifies the glaze and the porcelain, making the items non-porous and giving them their final finish.
• Decoration (Optional): If needed, additional decorations or patterns are added before the final glaze firing. These can include hand-painting, decals, or other decorative techniques.

After the final firing, the porcelain items are ready for use or display, characterised by their smooth, translucent surface and durability.
