Women hate jean shopping. In every shop you are a different size, cuts are different, washes are constantly changing and the lights in the changing room are diabolical. But do men have the same issues?

Men seem to wear jeans with ease. There is a style for every shape and they aren''t exactly worried about poor lighting showing up cellulite.

Jeans were first worn by men, so it is men that can lay claim to them. The US navy even had bootcut jeans as their uniform in the first half of the 20th century. Then James Dean came along in Rebel Without a Cause and jeans were associated with rebellion, coolness and infinite amounts of style.

Since then, jeans have gone through a revolution. From flares in the 1970s, to drainpipes in the 80s to baggy in the 90s. Now, men''s jeans come in all shapes and sizes.

Right now, the most popular is the slim-fit, low-rise cut. It harks back to the punk look of the drainpipes of the 80s, but the low-rise keeps it modern and gives it a skater twist.

However, skinnies, which are just like the drainpipes of the decade of anti-establishmentarianism, are also a key trend. ...
... They have been reinvented by the indie band scene of the 2000s and are commonly worn with check shirts and DM-style boots.

A favourite hanging over from the 90s is the loose fitting, low-cut, wide-leg fit. This is often more like a combat trouser. Its roots are in the extreme sports community such as snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding, which is why they are so effortlessly cool. This fit died out a few years ago, but it is making a comeback this season, with carpenter style cuts.

Bootcut jeans are still around too, and have been since the navy sailors of the mid-20th century. They look particularly good with boots and jackets.

50s-style turn-ups are back this year. Team them with a red bomber jacket to look straight out of Rebel Without A Cause. Watch out for everything 50''s inspired in the coming season.

The main benefit of jeans is their ability to be dressed up as well as down. Not many other items can be worn with trainers as well as evening shoes, shirts and t-shirts and look just as good with both. Barton Loi is a freelance fashion journalist. They recommend New Look for mens jeans.
