Sometimes, you'd struggle to get a full group together. ... waaaaay down the list. It wasn't until I stepped into Icecrown Citadel with nine other guildmates that I finally began to appreciate the lower barrier for entry. My guild was a group of exhardcore raiders who all switched servers. We all had lives now and could no longer raid every night, and we didn't want to manage a bunch of other people. A group of ten was about as many as we could muster. Downing a few bosses, I was given virtually every item that dropped that was usable by me. Most of the other raiders already had what they wanted from here and were just collecting Emblems of Frost, the current highest tier of tokens that can be exchanged for excellent gear. It became rapidly apparently that if I were to be seen as adequate, and to not be outdamaged by our healers, I would have to run some heroic dungeons. It also meant that even the best gear from the toughest raids a year ago was now hopelessly outdated. Gear had become so important, in fact, that a "gearscore" mod seemed now to be extremely widely used, and could show how well equipped a character was at a glance. When I was invited to go on the Citadel raid, my guildmates were shocked at just how poor my equipment was. I had been a hardcore raider during the days of Vanilla WoW, when each battle required potion and foodbuff stacking, a full team of 40 players, and had only one difficulty, which tended to be insanely hard.
