Like human kidneys, dog kidney is essential for blood filtration and waste removal from the body. In addition to these two critical functionalities, there are other functions of the dog kidney. The kidney is one organ that performs a lot of functions that helps in keeping your dog in good shape.
However understanding this vital organ for canine health requires careful study if you have the interest for it. The kidney will not only remove wastes, it will eliminate toxic compounds, clean the blood, maintain balance in the body’s fluid composition and balance the body p.H. The dog kidney anatomy has a bean-shaped design to the eyesight. There are 2 kidneys in a dog and in all mammals, with each kidney containing millions of nephrons which is the functional unit of the kidney. Each nephron has a part called a glomerulus attached to a long tubule which connects to the ureter. The location of the kidney is towards the lumbar region where the kidney lies against the wall of the abdomen.
The kidney has different parts like the: Glomerulus, Bowman’s capsule, Nephron, Loop of Henle, ...
... Collecting duct, Proximal tubule, Distal tubule, Efferent arteriole, and the Afferent arteriole. Each part of the kidney has a vital role to play in the full functionality of the kidney in a canine. Due to the nature of the work done by the kidney, two are required for maximum performance. In unique cases, one kidney can manage the task of two, of course, this in addition to specific lifestyle changes for your dog.
The part of the kidney where the glomerulus can be found is in charge of blood filtration. After cleaning and separation, the fluid empties into the ureter through a collecting duct. The kidney releases hormones which are responsible for blood pressure control. Bile salts, uric acid, fatty acids, glucose, minerals, salts and other compounds are secreted by the tubules attached to the nephrons. Urine is filtered from the blood and stored in the bladder before being removed through the urethra when the dog urinates.
Dog kidney anatomy diseases also known as renal disease occur when either one of or both kidneys develop problems due to a number of causes. These problems can lead to damages in the kidney body leading to renal failure. At this point, the kidney stops performing its functions, failing to remove water and nitrogenous wastes from the body. Symptoms of kidney failure in dogs can include chronic nausea, increased blood pressure, anorexia, acid-base imbalance, muscle pain, erratic behavior, poor urine removal, breathlessness, amongst other symptoms. Diagnosing kidney disease in dogs is typically similar across the board with other mammals.
There is no significant difference from cat kidney anatomy, if your pet happens to be a cat. Severity of symptoms might vary but diagnosis will notice increased urination, increased thirst for water, presence of blood in urine, painful urination or complete failure to release urine.
All cases of kidney malfunction in dogs require immediate veterinary attention as dogs unlike humans cannot talk to us if we are attentive. Urinalysis is the main diagnostic tool used to detect malfunction of the kidney. Urine PH, color, presence or absence of glucose, protein, creatinine and microbes are part of checks to detect what the development could be. Urinary tract infections, kidney stones and other conditions require tried and tested approaches to reduce risk of worsening the renal condition. Treatment of kidney disease in dogs should only be undertaken by proven professionals with a track record of successfully treating such conditions. Anything short of quality reviews and referrals should disqualify any veterinary clinic.
