The 1986 World Series of Poker had a lot of followers due to the excitement that had come forth the year before. The World Series of Poker in 1985 was extremely fast paced and brought a lot of excitement to the table. The turnout was bigger than ever and it brought more money and excitement to the event than had ever been seen. The players were rapidly eliminated before only one player was left standing. This exciting tournament set high expectations for what was to come in the 1986.

The event took place at Binion's Horseshoe and fielded one more player than the previous year had fielded. The growth of the tournament wasn't quite as large as they were hoping, but it did continue to show signs of progress.

Of course each year the field is whittled down bit by bit until there aren't very many players left standing. The final group would consist of a lot of the great players in the game at that point. These players included Roger Moore, Jesse Alto, Bill Smith Mike Harthcock, Berry Johnston and Gary Berland.

These players were the last 6 players standing and put up a good fight at the final table. As play progressed ...
... Roger Moore was asked to leave the table. Despite losing the tournament he still walked home with a decent prize of nearly 40 thousand dollars. Although this was a decent prize, it was not nearly what he went to Binion's Horseshoe for. He was shooting for the grand prize.

This left 5 players remaining. Of the 5 players one of them, Billy Smith, started to fall behind. Smith had put up a great showing the year before and won the hearts of the crowd. He was reportedly drunk, but still managed to play his cards right and won the entire tournament. His showdown and T.J. Cloutier will go down as one of the great memories of the World Series of Poker History. Despite his great showing the year before, Smith was not able to stick. He finished 5th and took home just over 50 thousand dollars for his efforts.

The next player to fall would be one of the all time great players that the game has ever seen. Jesse Alto is a legend and has seen a lot of success in the World Series of Poker. Alto was a perennial contender for the bracelet in these tournaments and found himself in position to win a money prize 10 different times at the World Series of Poker. This year ended up like all of the others though, without a bracelet. Alto would leave with a prize of more than 60 thousand dollars.

The remaining three players battled it out and each was in line to take home huge prizes. Ultimately Gary Berland fell and took home 114 thousand dollars, leaving Harthcock and Johnston. Johnston battled tougher and luck landed with him. He would become the 1986 World Series of Poker Champion. He took home a prize of nearly 600 thousand dollars.
