We all adore the sparkle or 'scintillation' of a diamond. It's allure is documented in history and human beings melt under their spell every day. But how would you feel if you realised that your treasured gem was in fact...a fake?

Of course, we would hope that anyone selling us a diamond is genuine, and would never do anything as deceptive as selling a purchaser a fake stone. But we have to be realistic. There are those whose aim it is to deceive us, and unless your diamond education is up to speed, you could fall prey to an untrustworthy person, whose premise is to take your money.

The first safety measure to consider, would be to go to a reputable diamond merchant, such as My Diamonds, www.mydiamonds.com.au . Here, you will find an eclectic selection of stunning diamond jewellery, such as diamond engagement rings, wedding bands, pendants and diamond stud earrings. If that were not enough, their customer service is second to none and their trustworthy reputation precedes them.
By purchasing your diamond jewellery from My Diamonds, you will ensure that your diamonds are GIA graded and ...
... of the finest quality, while the jewellery has been designed by quality craftsmen with 25 years experience, who design for clientèle on the Gold Coast. My Diamonds know the importance of safety and security when it comes to making such an important purchase. Below is their advice, and some tips on how to protect yourself, when buying your chosen diamond.

The stone can be tested with heat. This will not harm it unless the diamond is fake. Real diamonds disperse heat. The test can be carried out at jewellery and diamond merchants
Real diamonds are usually set in quality metals, such as platinum or white gold. The setting and the mount of the diamond should also be checked, as a quality setting is easy to spot.
A real diamond scintillates in different shades of sparkling grey. Other colours or rainbow reflections should be pointed out to the diamond merchant.
A transparency test is also useful when testing a diamond for quality. Turn the diamond upside down and place it over text. If the text can be clearly read through the stone, it is probably not a real diamond.
An electronic diamond tester can be used to check all types of diamonds except the moissanite stone. (silicon carbide)
Weigh your diamond. A cubic zirconium weighs approximately 50% more than a real stone of the same size and shape. Check out the gram/carat weight scale on the My Diamonds website to evaluate the stone.
Do a fog test by breathing on it. The longer the fog remains, the more likely it is to be a fake. A real diamond will disperse the fog very quickly
Place the diamond under a UV light. Real diamonds will reflect a blue fluorescence. This does not apply to all stones, so other types of tests should be carried out.
If the diamond is mounted, you should not be able to see the bottom of a diamond looking directly down from the top
Most importantly, ask to see the diamond's certificate. Every real diamond has been graded by a laboratory, such as GIA for the 4C's, Clarity, Cut, Colour and Carat Weight.

We would recommend that you purchase your diamond from a recognised and trustworthy diamond merchant, such as My Diamonds, whose selection of loose diamonds and diamond jewellery is second to none and whose diamonds have all been laboratory graded.
To ensure that your diamond is the real thing, call My Diamonds on 1800 766 567, and speak to one of their professional diamond specialists, or go to their website www.mydiamonds.com.au and access their extensive section on Diamond Education.
