Competition is a fact of life and actually desirable in that it fosters increased quality at lower cost for businesses and consumers alike. However, the race to getting high page rankings can tempt some internet marketing firms to try unethical practices that disobey by attempting to deceive the search engines. It’s not rare to find internet marketing companies that employ unfair and unethical SEO techniques to achieve top ranks. This type of SEO is typically called “Black Hat” SEO.

When users go to search engines to find useful information, but end up getting a lot of hard-to-read content choked with awkward and repetitive keywords and phrases, then you know that unsavory SEO tactics have been utilized in those cases to bolster the site’s rank on the search page results. This becomes frustrating for users because they will have trouble finding results that best match their needs. This is precisely why Google et al seeks these sites out and penalizes them appropriately as they interfere with the searcher’s experience online.

Some ...
... SEO companies try to justify their black hat practices blaming demanding client demands to get to page 1 of Google in short amounts of time. However that is a false notion and is a shameful attempt to shift the blame to clients. These same firms will provided guarantees as to page rank and time frame; guarantees that are false and impossible to make when one seriously considers and fully understands all of the factors involved in the competition for page 1search engine rankings.

However, SEO clients must realize that there is just no way to guarantee results.

So, Black Hat SEO is simply not SEO just as spam email isn’t really email. The sources of these techniques are just trying to take advantage of the ignorant (unaware). Do you really need to know these techniques as to whether or not someone is White Hat or Black Hat? No. All you have to do is use a very simple set of criteria for selecting an SEO Company.

Live Results / Deep Results †when you are interviewing an Internet Marketing Company, you must see live and “deep” results for existing clients. Live results is simply going to Google, entering a keyword provided by the company and verifying first page results for one of their clients. Verify that the client is actually a client usually by seeing the Internet Marketing Company’s name in the footer on the home page. Deep Results is the high ranking for many keywords for the same client … and … the keywords are at least moderately competitive (more than 250,000 competing pages). Then get the same quality results for other clients and verify them live right in front of you from Google searches.

Existing Client Interviews †you must actually interview 1-3 clients, not only to verify the results, but to gauge the ranking the client gives to the SEM. What are your experiences with the SEM? How are they to work and collaborate with? Are you planning on renewing their services? Have you recommended their services before? What improvements would you like to see from the SEM? Don’t ask yes or no questions. You won’t get the information you need. Ask questions that require thought and listen, not only to what they say, but also how they say it.

“Black Hatters” can’t show you Live / Deep Results and they can’t provide you a number of existing clients that can confirm real bottom line results. Without conducting some basic due diligence, you are just talking to a voice on the phone.

So Ethical Search Engine Optimization is Search Engine Optimization. Black Hat is unethical and all of the poor characteristics that go along with it.

Because your business relies on your online presence and reputation, you must be concerned with the way your SEO Company handles your strategy; because it might spell the difference between succeeding and failing in your online business. It is therefore best to partner with a company that practices ethical search engine optimization … obviously.
