This all-inclusive guide will help you make the most of your learning experience. You will get a thorough understanding of the many facets of becoming a web developer and how to go about adding each skill to your skill set.

Learn the Basics

Before diving into the various coding tools it is essential to build a foundation of certain concepts that will familiarize you with the underlying systems.

Basics in Internet Infrastructure and Networking: Learn concepts like DNS (Domain Name System), networking protocols like HTTP/HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol) and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol), web servers, clients (web browsers), and web hosting. The DNS set-up transforms user-friendly domain names into IP addresses that a server can read and interact with. Networking protocols allow web applications to communicate, perform, scale and also enable sites to stay secure. Web servers, clients and web hosting perform a crucial role in site development, deployment and maintenance.

Data Structures and Algorithms: Data structure concepts teach us different ways of data storage and ...
... organization and how to easily access and modify them. Web development applications often require data structures like arrays, objects, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, and graphs to organize the information. Algorithms are procedural formulas that operate on data structures and help in optimizing web applications.
Master the Key Skills

Web Developers need proficiency in three key technologies - HTML (HyperText Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and JS (JavaScript).

HTML is used to bring the basic structure to the content of any website page. HTML tags organize the content which allows browsers to display content correctly and search engines crawlers to understand the content and rank it accordingly. It is also the foundation on which the functionalities of CSS and JavaScript are built. CSS gives more control over the presentation and layout of webpages. Javascript adds dynamic features to HTML elements and enables the web page to interact with a user and respond to clicks.

Set-up your Development Environment
Web Development requires a virtual space to write and test our code and tools to manage changes in the code.
A code editor like Visual Studio Code or a more basic text editor like Notepad++ are both great options. Visual Studio Code does have an added Syntax Highlighting feature that makes coding much more efficient. The code can be tested out using any browser like Chrome or Firefox. Finally, Version Control tools help manage the complexities of code updates and collaborative team outputs. Popular choices for distributed version control systems are Git, Mercurial and Bazaar. Centralized systems like Subversion (SVN), Perforce (Helix Core) and TFS/Azure DevOps are other options.

Start Building Projects

There are multiple options available for honing your newly learned skill-set. Start small. The goal is to not only learn more about your Web Development Training toolkit but also learn how to work within a complex collaborative environment.

Just Build Sites: You can attempt to recreate popular existing sites, with all their features and functionalities. Make sure to develop your pages to be responsive and adaptable to the user screen size. Experiment with static sites like a ‘About Me’ page or a landing page, and dynamic sites like a blog platform or an Ecommerce site. Also try to build an app with CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations, like a To-Do List with checklist functionality.

Work on Open Source and Real-world projects: Find projects that interest you on platforms like Github, within repositories labeled “good first issue” or “help wanted”. You can also gain further experience working as a freelancer, intern or a volunteer.

Be Active in Communities and Competitions: Participate in Hackathons or coding competitions like CodePen Challenges or Google Code Jam. Participate in online communities like Stack Overflow, Reddit, Discord, or Dev.to, and actively engage with the community, and learn from them. There are also many publicly-available learning resources available, like MDN Web Docs, to guide you through your learning journey.

Practice Deployment of your projects: It is important to learn the process of web page deployment. Use any of the services like Github Pages, Netlify, Vercel, Heroku or DigitalOcean.
Keep Learning and Practicing: Stay updated with the latest trends and best practices by following popular blogs, and taking part in webinars and online courses. Utilize that knowledge to regularly review and optimize your existing code and build better ones. Focus on optimizing all your projects for accessibility, speed and scalability.
Use Web Development Best Practices

Always remember to maintain the best practices in every code you write. That way your code will always be efficient, maintainable and scalable.
These practices include writing clean and Readable code that is also Maintainable, following Semantic HTML, maintaining proper Documentation and Code Comments, aiming for a Responsive site design and optimized site Performance, using Version Control, following page Security practices, following UX/UI best practices, optimizing database queries, automated Testing and Debugging, and using Testing and Deployment (CI/CD) Pipelines.

Expand your Toolkit
After building a few projects, it is important to familiarize yourself with advanced tools that will help you to further enhance your basic Javascript code.

Use Frameworks and Libraries: Try to build code using Frameworks and Libraries. Frameworks are pre-written code and tools that can be reused to build more efficient web applications and save time. Libraries provide prebuilt functionalities that are extremely helpful for tasks like data manipulation, animations, and image processing.

Popular Front-end Frameworks like React, Angular and Vue.js interact with the browser to create the visual part of any web application. Back-end Frameworks like Express.js, Django and Ruby on Rails work on the server-side to manage database applications, user authentication and overall application logic. A third option is to work with Full-Stack Frameworks like Meteor and Next.js.

Use API (Application Programming Interfaces) Integrations: These are protocols that help various software applications to communicate with each other. They are often used to exchange data between browser (client), server and third-party applications.

Common Web APIs to learn about are RESTful APIs (Representational State Transfer), SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) and GraphQL. Other important APIs in web development include Library APIs and Database APIs. Some popular API examples that you can explore are the Google Maps API, the Twitter API, the Stripe API, and the Firebase API.
Use SPAs (Single Page Applications) and AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML): These methods enhance the Javascript code to permit partial uploading of a web page based on the server response, to provide a faster, better site performance and user experience. AJAX also allows creation of Real-Time web applications.
Focus on your Interests

With a bit of experience, many developers choose to either be a Front-end, Back-end or Full-Stack Developer based on their personal interests and goals.

Front-end Developers work with the client-side (browser) and are responsible for the entire User Experience. This work requires a keen sense of design, aesthetics and functionality. On the other hand, Back-end Developers are engineers who develop the server-side logic, systems and applications. This requires them to be proficient in a broader set of languages like Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, use APIs and have expertise in database tools like SQL (Structured Query Language).
Conclusion
Web Development is a vast field that is always evolving. Keeping up with the trends and being consistent with your practice is the key to becoming a proficient Web Developer.
