The aluminum PCB consists of a thin layer of thermally conductive dielectric material which can in turn transfer and dissipate heat to a much higher degree than a standard rigid PCB.

Due to the thermal nature of LEDs, the substrate generally is a metal to facilitate heat dissipation away from the device. This metal layer must have an insulation layer to isolate the conductive property of this metal layer from the copper traces that make up the second layer. The third film is a solder mask which forms the upper layer above the traces to avoid shorting, oxidation, and corrosion.
