It was estimated that 7% of the world’s gold is available in electronically disposed items in the form of Gold Finger PCB. Whereas a tonne of Gold Ore yields only 5 grams of pure gold on average, a tonne of electronic waste contains 300 grams of gold inside it.

Electronics dominate the world today in most areas of life. Regardless of whether one goes to a hospital, a government office, a school, a restaurant, or a supermarket: electronics are working in the background. The foundation of such electronic interconnectedness is the PCB gold finger, a smart and witty innovation that is at the helm of contemporary digital reality.

In general, electronic devices are not internalized or put in a single system or network. Instead, small electronic components are always connected through contacts so that where one small component can fail another can take its place. For instance, gold fingers may be used to attach the central electronics in a computer such as the motherboard to peripheral accessories such as speakers, microphones, and monitors.

What are the PCB Gold Fingers?

One might wonder what the name of such contacts implies. They are known as the “Gold Fingers” since they are long, thin, and apart from each other and they are made of gold. Gold is a very ductile metal with excellent electrical conductivity, and therefore it is possible to produce it in large quantities. The following figure illustrates the RAM commonly used in computers with gold fingers indented at the base of the chip.

We have two types of gold fingers in the market, and this depends on the type of manufacturing process that was used in developing the product.

Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG): This process contributes to the formation of the most frequently used gold fingers because it is less costly as well as slightly easier to solder when compared to electroplated gold. The disadvantage or the effect obtainable from the above process is that it produces softer and thinner layers of films with a surface roughness of between 2-5 microns which are liable to wear off due to abrasion as they continuously undergo mounting and dismounting.

Electroplated Hard gold: Far thicker movies can be deposited by this procedure and usually include Gold layers of around 30 microns thick but are used only in specific applications due to increased production cost.

Gold Finger PCB are like the universal connectors in the computing industry and the various chips play the role of different jacks connecting all sorts of chips through some predetermined paths. WiFi modules, RAMs, and processing units make use of clear and unobstructed channels within a computer chip and then through one chip to another regarding its command.

For instance, a button on the remote control of a TV device generates a signal that propagates to one or numerous circuits. After this, the PCB of the remote transmits signals using an LED blaster at the front of this remote, which is received by an IR receiver at the front of the TV. Using gold fingers, the IR receiver transmits the data to the main circuits and the processing unit of the TV.

Gold Plating on a commercial is possible through the following steps Gold plating a Commercial scale. This should especially be the case with key components that require gold plating such as the microphones, to ensure that their efficiency in usage is optimal, then the gold plating conducted should be free of mistakes.

It is necessary always to make sure that gold fingers also always fit in the way that they were expected to. For that, they usually pass through one or two inspections, at most. Apprehensions may emerge if, for instance, the gold that has been coated onto the material is chipped away or if the surface finish is not consistent then if one is using such a product complications may arise.

It is widely known that in the process of manufacturing a printed circuit board, the gold finger-plating is performed as the final step but all other processes in production precede it.

Gold Finger Specifications

There is a worldwide demand for gold fingers for various general uses, which require different gold thicknesses, manufacturing qualities, and requirements. If it comes to robotic arms or consumer electronics, gold finger technical requirements are dissimilar.

Certain physical attributes are kept in mind while designing gold fingers into a particular PCB. Some of them are the width of the finger, the space that separates two gold fingers, their alignment accuracy, the length of the finger, and many others.

Gold plated connectors cannot be directly in contact with a plated through hole.

Solder Masks and screen printing should be avoided in regions near the gold fingers.

Gold fingers on the PCBs must not be in the middle of the PCBs to bevel the PCB edge as discussed above.

Nonadherence to one or more of the above rules would result in defects on the gold fingers breaking the connection of components to a circuit board or gold fingers that distort making them ineffective in fitting perfectly into the slots provided.

Gold is rather a strong metal, so it is perfect for the application that causes abrasion due to connecting/disconnecting it. It is also a very ductile metal as highlighted by its stupendous conductivity for electrical current. If some other metal may be used, the circuits may break the contact with the friction they have. If more was not enough, gold displays unique characteristics in terms of corrosion as well as oxidation and goes ahead to be dubbed as one of the least reactive elements within the reactivity series.

Can one manufacture most of the Gold Finger PCB for use and not come across the scarcest element on earth? The straightforward answer is no because the mechanical, electrical, and mechanical properties of rare metals are required due to the complexities of today’s structure.

Before it is effectively electroplated, it is alloyed with cobalt and nickel to strengthen the gold further. Between 150 microinches and 200 microinches, the optimum electroplating thickness of Nickel should lie.
