Exploring Best Burgers Around The World

Burgers are an American classic that has conquered the world, and can be found both in street stands (with long queues) and in three-star restaurants that have taken the time to create a gourmet version of the sandwich that originated at the end of the 19th century and has rapidly become a street-food staple. The formula is simple: a cheese-covered disk of grilled ground beef (topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a few sauces) is placed between two buns topped with sesame seeds. It's not a fancy meal, but it's comforting and quick, and there's probably not a human in the world who can resist it (even vegans have a plant-based version so they can have the incredible sensation that comes with the first bite). Fast-food outlets compete to see who has the best burger, the most famous chefs can't help but want to get in on the act (with truffles, foie gras, reductions and sophisticated sauces, there are even Michelin burgers) and mere mortals (i.e. those of us who didn't go to cookery school but love fat) even make them at home. But with so many varieties, styles and combinations, is there such a thing as the perfect burger? ...
... It probably depends on your personal taste, but National Geographic's food experts say there are 12 burgers around the world that represent the best of this legendary dish, and that every sandwich lover should try one at least once in their life.


Shake Shack, New York

This restaurant started out as a small street stall and quickly became a successful eatery with branches in different parts of the world. The menu is simple and short, and the star is the Shack Burger (a double version for the hungry) with its classic sweet potato bun, homemade sauce and meat cooked perfectly on the grill, always on the premises. It's simplicity at its best, and proof that less is more when it comes to burgers.

In-N-Out, California

This is a must-stop in Los Angeles and other parts of California. Like Shake Shack, this burger is simple and classic, with no fancy ingredients or complicated sauces, but it's always made on the spot and its special sauce makes it unique and addictive (and you can be sure it'll always be good quality).

Uniburger, Montreal

The Americans have mined this sandwich and are experts, but Canada is competing with them with this In-N-Out inspired restaurant. They've just been named the best burgers in Canada, and that's because they only make simple burgers, but with the best ingredients available.

Al-Baik, Lucknow

Al-Baik based in Lucknow, India started its journey in 2009 with one restaurant and today they are operating 185 restaurants all over the world. Al-Baik India’s Chicken Burger has been very famous and loved among locals and visitors, giving perfect taste of Indian spices and chicken. Grilled Chicken burger, Cheese n Chicken burger and Sauce n chicken burgers are some of their hot selling dishes.


Home Burgers, Bogota

The creators of Home Burgers decided to open their restaurant because they were looking for the perfect burger in Colombia and couldn't find it. They offer beef burgers, vegetarian chicken burgers and are served with a famous secret sauce that is homemade and gives it an extra touch of flavor.

Honest Burgers, London

London isn't a city famous for its food, but it does have a good gastronomic scene, and that's where burgers come in. These have become the city's favorites because they're simple and well-seasoned for maximum flavor.

We Love Burgers, Mexico

These burgers are crazy, the meat is juicy, the bread is soft and the ingredients vary. You can find everything from traditional burgers to versions with bacon, onion rings and homemade barbecue sauce. The French Dip is a favorite, with roast beef and caramelized onions, accompanied by a thick slice of melted Swiss cheese (it's one of the best burgers in Mexico).

The Bird, Berlin

If you ask a Berlin resident where you can try the best burger, they'll probably recommend The Bird. Remember, the origin of burgers is in Hamburg, but Berlin has the best, and The Bird's burgers are huge. 250 grams of beef between two English muffins. All served with everything from pickles to guacamole.

The Butcher, Amsterdam

This restaurant opened in 2012 and is already an icon in the city. The burger is made with Aberdeen Angus beef and there are 17 varieties with different ingredients and flavors. The restaurant is committed to creating the best burger, always using fresh ingredients, special sauces and a homemade brioche bun. Everyone's favorite is the Daddy, which features edam (cheese from the Netherlands), BBQ and grilled onions.


Blend, Paris

Paris is one of the cities with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, confirming that we are the champions of good food. Among other great burger places, Blend was created by chef Victor Garnier, who was determined to create the perfect gourmet burger, with a homemade approach that sees him chopping the meat by hand, making the ketchup in his own kitchen and baking the bun every day in his oven.
