There are several ways that roofs can sustain damage, but the most common we run into in Texas is storm damage. We work with repairs for storm roof damage in the Woodlands, TX as well as storm damage inspections that can help when homeowners file a claim with their insurance providers, so we’re familiar with the ways that stormy weather can harm a roof. In this post, we’re going to look over some of the common types of storm damage your roof may suffer.

Wind Damage
The high winds of many storms can remove and tear shingles from a roof. Although the best roofing shingle material today has wind resistance, it won’t stand up against the 130 mph winds of a hurricane.

When shingles are stripped away or damaged, it exposes the roof underlayment as well as the building materials in your home to water damage. Shingles can also curl from wind damage, and this will ruin the water sealing created by having the shingles overlap.

Hailstone Damage
Hail storms are one of the biggest challenges that local roofs face. Tiny hail won’t do any damage, but we sometimes encounter hail storms with stones larger ...
... than an inch in diameter. The impact of large hailstones will crack and shatter shingles and dent metal roofs.

Even lesser damage can remove the granules from shingles, which weakens their ability to protect the roof from UV rays from the sun. From a purely aesthetic point of view, hail damage can make your roof look ugly.

Storm Debris
You’ve probably seen a picture like it before—and we’ll put one at the top of this post as a reminder—but trees falling over onto roofs often occurs during intense storms. The damage can be severe enough to require a complete roof replacement. Storms also hurl around smaller debris (like branches and rocks) that can damage shingles and dent parts of the roof, leaving it more exposed to the elements and further damage.

Standing Water
We often emphasize to our customers the importance of having proper roof drainage with gutters and storm drains. This is because standing water that remains on a roof after a storm can do insidious damage to the roof. The water will get through tiny cracks and get up under the shingles, possibly getting through the roof deck. Standing water also encourages mold growth, and this may get into the roof deck and ruin it.

Schedule a Storm Damage Inspection
After a storm has passed, we recommend you do a visual inspection of your roof. Don’t get up on the roof, but you can stand up on a ladder to get a better view. Look for cracked or missing shingles, curled shingles, loose gutters, shiny marks where hail has fallen, dents in the roof material or the flashing, and stagnant water pools.

If you think you’ve got storm damage, call our team and arrange for an inspection where we’ll look for storm damage. We can help you get started with repairs, and we can use our knowledge to work with your insurance provider if you wish to make a claim.
