The Dramatic Lake Como In The Lombardy Region Of Italy
Lake Como in English is known as Lago di Como in Italian. A glacial creation in Lombardy, Italy it is considered one of the country’s most attractive lakes. The inverted Y shaped Lake Como lies in the northern Italian region between the bustling Milan and the border of Switzerland. Italy’s deepest lake is about 50 km long and surrounded by hills and mountains that give way to numerous outdoor activities like, biking, camping, boating, windsurfing and hiking to name a few.
The scenery, towns and villages provide a magnificent chance for the photographer and visitors have long appreciated the cultural and historical aspects of the region. Along with the natural beauty of the area there is an air of romantic splendor to Lake Como. The area is quite famous for its palaces and villas that boast some of the most picturesque architecture in the country. It has been a popular haven for the wealthy and the nobles since the ancient days of the Roman Empire. More recently celebrities such as George Clooney, Madonna and Sylvester Stallone have enjoyed their homes on the shores of Lake Como.
The ...
... quaint village of Bellagio, also called the pearl of the lake has a population of about 200. It is magnificently historic with its cobbled lanes, the town square, Piazza San Giacomo and the church that dominates the square, the Romanesque Basilica di San Giacomo. Bellagio sits on a hilly point where Lake Como forks into two long branches. It is a peaceful town in which to spend a holiday, with two public gardens to visit at Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi, classy boutiques, choices of fine restaurants, bars and outdoor cafes. Bellagio manages to maintain its elegant charm though it is a well-known tourist escape boasting 900 beds in its grand hotels. The location is a perfect base to easily explore other towns on the opposite shores by boat excursions.
At the southern end of the east branch of Lake Como is the pleasant and inviting town of Como. A must to experience there is Duomo, an impressive cathedral built over several centuries; it gives way to Gothic and Renaissance architecture and artwork. Of interest to behold are San Fedele, an earlier cathedral built in the tenth century, a Romanesque church Sant'Abbondio and the town's art gallery, Pinacoteca. The notably tall, nine-hundred-year-old gateway, Porta Vittoria is also a grand sight to see in Como.
On the western shore of Lake Como is the popular town of Menaggio. It serves the visitor well with a nice range of accommodation and as a base from which to explore the region. A wealth of useful area advice and guidance to activities and attractions is available at the Menaggio Tourist Information Office.
The beautiful, tranquil and always inviting Lake Como and its surrounding villages and towns have much to offer guests. The options to relax on the lake's shore, explore the history, dine on fine Italian cuisine and simply enjoy the magical splendors of the territory are endless.
