The promises for sustainability and consciousness of the brands silenced bustling consumers, but it didn't last that long. As the looming climate crisis presents the world with extreme challenges, people have entered uncertain grounds again.

They are not asking but demanding the retailers to show real and tangible results that hold some significance and reduce the atmospheric damage. In times like these, leading groups and brand design agencies have come up with innovative ways to showcase their commitment. One of the approaches that many of them are adopting is - packaging. Meaning these visionaries are leaning towards sustainable packaging to retain their consumer's trust. And, with 80% of shoppers claiming that they are willing to pay more, winning consumer's trust via this method might work out better than expected.

However, strictly speaking, more than anything else, it has become a necessity and a responsibility for the inhabitants of this planet. Using biodegradable, recycled or reused materials is slowly becoming the new normal and consumers couldn't be happier ...
... about this change. That's why this article is going to seek ways for businesses to implement eco-friendly packaging techniques while also using this approach in their favour to attract more consumers.

Optimising every inch
The first step in reducing carbon emissions and usage of natural resources is by lowering the carbon footprint and utilising the already existing resources and even reusing them. Alongside this elimination of unnecessary materials and elements can also prove to be efficient both in terms of money and sustainability.

According to DS Smith, 86,071 tonnes of CO2 emissions are caused by air commerce because of oversized packages. That's why having the right-sized packaging and optimising every inch of that package is what a proper use of resources looks like.

Many brands have already started hustling to lessen the waste by shipping their products in the right-sized boxes, and some are even trying to reuse those package boxes that are returned.

Using paper for packaging
Plastic is one of the most harmful materials not only for the planet but also for the animals. Due to the negative effects of plastic and paper becoming the easiest and most accessible materials among all, the inclination towards paper has surged.

With a twin focus, this material addresses the consumer's concern and reduces emissions while also having the ability to biodegrade in just two months. This is a much shorter time as compared to plastic, which takes 500 years. Brands all over the industry are focusing on swapping plastic with paper and reaching their suitability goals.

Moreover, technological developments and innovations have allowed room for various eco-friendly materials that can be employed instead of harmful materials or cutting an insane amount of trees to create paper. For example, Papacks, a Germany based company is making the use of reusable fiberboard instead of the plastic ones to reduce the carbon emissions to half.

Returnable options
With the determination to create a circular economy with zero waste packaging, brands have unveiled their creativity and come up with returnable options. What this system really means is to deposit a sum of money to use containers instead of one-time use packages. These containers get refilled by the brands themselves to minimise the waste, and some brands don't even charge for the containers, but various terms and conditions are applicable in those cases.

Every day, at least one package gets delivered in a street; through this example, one can easily calculate what it means for the word. Its environmental benefits and consumer satisfaction rates are what make this approach a negotiable practice. This method is being implemented mainly by grocery stores, skincare and food brands. Even brands like Burger King are using reusable packaging.

Fun and interactive unboxing
Businesses are in the race to entice their consumers, and in this scenario, they are making things fun and interesting by giving their shoppers an interactive unboxing experience. Although the prime focus is to adapt and promote sustainability, but engaging with their audience at the same time won't hurt. In fact, it can boost the loyalty among the shoppers.

From allowing the consumers to refill their containers to encouraging them to share their experience on social media, this approach really transforms the way consumers interact with a brand. Many businesses are even sending in small handwritten notes, while others are tapping into the potential of beautiful modern-day illustrations.

In short, it's a unique opportunity for the brand to showcase its story and make the products even more personalised and niche-centric while sharing the product’s story.

Recycling the packs
The notion of recycling the packs is picking up the pace for better environmental conditions. While artificial materials are being created with technology, this approach is going to take the front row in terms of sustainability.

Obviously, adopting new packaging materials is going to go mainstream, but till then manufacturers are moving beyond traditional methods and trying their best to recycle the materials that are usually thrown away in everyday life. And, that does not mean downscaling or lowering the value of the product, instead, they are creating high-value and quality materials which creates even bigger and exciting opportunities for the industry.

Concluding Note
The generation of today doesn't want brands to rave about environmentalism and eco-friendliness. Instead, they want real changes. Whether it's a store layout design, product units or packaging, sustainability is a must-have. It no longer remained a choice but an absolute resolve. But that works in favour of all - the people, the brands and the planet. People get to inhabit a better earth, the natural realm becomes more lively, and brands get to maintain or uplift their goodwill and reputation in the minds of their consumers, leading to an automatic increase in their sales and revenue.
