According to different engineering curriculums in India, it is a must that each student in a batch executes a project on the trade they have chosen. Your project performance will be one of the key factors evaluated by your future employers on your job interviews, so executing a project successfully is very important. This article furnishes the details of things to be kept in mind while you prepare your final year mechanical engineering projects.

1.Start your preparations earlier.
Always keep ‘time' factor in mind. The usual time period allotted for a final year project is 2 months. So if the project you are planning to execute is a risky one, risky in the sense that you are not 100% sure about the project output or the project completion date, be prepared to start ahead of your schedule.

2.Choose a project that has practical application.
Think about the scope for your project while you choose your topic. I have seen many mechanical engineering projects that have no practical applications in Industry. For example, you may ...
... be able to construct a fork lift, but since there are many other companies making it what difference can you bring to industry? Instead try something that can reduce the size and number of machine elements, something that can reduce the power consumption or operational costs and make that the focus of your project. It will add value to your project both in your academics and in the perspective of your future employees.

3.Work with a team who appreciates the project.
In our curriculum, our final year mechanical engineering projects can be done alone or in a group. When you are planning to do a working project it is better to have a team of good spirited people with you. Make sure that you work with those who are interested only. Otherwise you may end up doing all the work by yourself and the project may not go as scheduled.

4.Be sure to be present at every phase of the project.
It also means ‘Do Not Outsource'. Of course you can outsource project phases like material fabrication and machining, but be sure to be present there while it is done. When you do a project on your own, you will learn lot more than you would if you had a readymade project. It will help you to face your viva sessions with full confidence and impress the examiner. Otherwise you may face a Viva session hell lot tougher than you dream it will be.

Wish you best of luck with your projects and presentations.
