Mlb: History Of Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians have a rich history that goes all the way back to 1901. In 1901 the team began play in the American League and have remained in the AL ever since. They currently play within the Central Division of the American League. The Indians have been a dominant force in the Central Division ever since it was formed in 1994.
Although people remember the Cleveland Indians for their dominance in the AL in the 90's, the team has had success throughout the history of the franchise. The team has won 2 World Series titles in their history and both of those titles came long before the 1990's.
The first World Series Championship for the Indians came in 1920. This year is known for infamous purposes in baseball history. Many think of this time and remember the Black Sox scandal taking place in Chicago. The Indians were playing tight with the White Sox and managed to pull ahead right at the end to take the American League Pennant. The Indians would face off against the Brooklyn Robins in the World Series. After falling behind initially the Indians put together a win streak to take the World Series title. This ...
... would be the first time in the team's history that they won the World Series.
Things began to change in baseball after 1920. The 1920's were dominated by one team in baseball, the New York Yankees. The Yankees put together a powerful team that pushed aside teams like the Indians. The Indians were simply not able to string together the same sort of success for nearly 30 years after their first title. It wasn't until 1948 that the Indians found themselves in the World Series again.
In 1948 the Indians made a very gutsy move. They looked over to the Negro Leagues and signed Negro League legend Satchel Paige. Paige was well known for his mysterious pitches that were rumored to be unlike any other. By the time he signed with the Indians he was already in his early 40s however. Despite his age he was able to put together a solid record and ERA to help the Indians on their way.
The Indians would take on the Boston Braves in the World Series. The Braves were no match for the Indians and the Indians would take the series in 6 games. This would be the 2nd and last World Series title for the Indians.
The Indians really did not make too much noise over the years until the 1990's after their 2nd World Series title. After the Central Division was created in 1994 the team went on to win the Division title every year between 1995 and 1999. During that stretch the team was able to reach the World Series twice and was led by big time players like Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Roberto Alomar, Manny Ramirez, Jose Mesa, and Omar Vizquel. These talented players helped the team find success, but they were still not able to take home another World Series Title.
The Indians have been a contender in the recent years, but the team has not been able to find the same sort of consistency that they had in the 1990s.
