The San Antonio Spurs are a basketball team in the National Basketball Association. The Spurs play in the Western Conference of the NBA and have been a force to be reckoned with for years.

The Spurs began their play in 1967 when they joined the American Basketball Association. In the beginning of their existence, the Spurs were known as the Dallas Chaparrals. The Chaparrals eventually moved to San Antonio and became the Spurs in 1973.

The team joined the NBA in 1976 and quickly found success after joining the league. After just a couple short seasons the Spurs became a dominating force in their division. From the year 1978 until 1983 the Spurs were the dominant team in their division, winning the division 5 times out of 6 years during that stretch of time. In those years the Spurs were led by one of the all time great scorers to play in the NBA, George Gervin.

Gervin was known as The Iceman throughout his career and revolutionized the game in many ways with his finger roll. The finger roll was his way of finishing near the hoop that had not truly been mastered before he joined the league. While Gervin was ...
... on the Spurs he provided them with the scoring that they needed to stay in the game year in and year out. While they did not make any headway in the playoffs, the Spurs were a perennial contender during the years of Gervin. Unfortunately that era would eventually come to an end. George Gervin was traded to the Bulls in the 1984-1985 season. After Gervin left the team they were not the same for many years.

Things would eventually change with the addition of their next big star. That star was named David Robinson. Robinson was one of the top big men to ever play the game and he made an immediate impact on the Spurs. After not making the playoffs for 7 years, Robinson came and carried the team to the playoffs in 1990, changing the direction the Spurs were headed. With Robinson on the team the Spurs became contenders again. They made the playoffs 5 times in the 1990's and Robinson even enjoyed an MVP season during the decade. However, it was the season that Robinson was injured and could not contribute that had the most benefit for the Spurs in the long run.

Without Robinson the team struggled and earned themselves the top pick in the draft in 1997. That year they drafted Tim Duncan. Duncan and Robinson would be known as the Twin Towers and would combine to lead the team to the best success that they had ever seen. The Twin Towers led the Spurs to two championships while they were together. These were the first two championships in the history of the franchise.

Duncan quickly evolved into the most fundamental player in the NBA. He was known for his skills on the offensive end, his ability to rebound, and also his great effort on defense. Even after Robinson retired Duncan was able to carry the Spurs to two more championships in 2005 and 2007.

Duncan is on the tail end of his career now and the Spurs are in need of a new star to step in as the team looks ready to decline.
