The Penn State Nittany Lions are one of the most storied teams in the history of college football. The team has tons of wins and records and has even won championships over the years. The Penn State Nittany Lions are truly one of the great organizations in the sport.

The team is best known now for Joe Paterno. Joe Paterno is one of those coaches that rise above even the talented players on his team as the most prominent figure in the organization. For the media and fans around the nation they don't care so much about whether or not the Penn State team has a lot of talent, they expect big things from the team no matter what. If Joe Paterno is coaching, the team is expected to win a lot of games no matter who Paterno puts out on the field.

Out of all of the teams that have won at least 20 bowl games in their history the Nittany Lions are tied for the highest winning percentage. The Nittany Lions have a record of 27-13-2 in their school's bowl history.
The team has accomplished perfect seasons numerous times in their history. Since 1887 the Nittany Lions have had 7 perfect seasons. Incredibly, 5 of these seasons have come since Joe Paterno took the helm in the 1960s.

The team has accomplished the feat of becoming the consensus National Champions just twice in their history. Those both came under the direction of Paterno in the 1980's. Despite the fact that they have only had a consensus championship twice, they have been awarded National Championships from the likes of the National Championship Foundation, the Foundation for the Analysis of Competitions and Tournaments, the Massey Ratings, the Dunkel System, Loren Maxwell, Soren Sorenson, The Fleming System, Billingsley Report, DeVold, Matthews Grid Ratings, New York Times and Sagarin Ratings. These different rating systems and organizations endorsed the Nittany Lions as National Champions in different years. The years that one or more of these aforementioned systems and organizations awarded them National Championships were in 1911, 1912, 1969, 1981, and 1994.

1994 was the last undefeated season for the Nittany Lions. Many people wondered if Joe Paterno was still an elite coach after a terrible stretch from 2000-2004, but Paterno has turned things around and has not had a season with less than 9 wins since 2005. They have even managed to win at least 11 games 3 times during that stretch.
