Nfl: History Of Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens are a professional football team from Baltimore, Maryland. The team plays in the National Football League in the North Division of the American Football Conference. The Baltimore Ravens have not been around for an extremely long time, but in the time that they have been in the league they have had a fair amount of success.
The history of the Ravens began actually with the falling out of the Cleveland Browns. The Browns were struggling, yet they did not wish to relocate. Rather than relocating the Browns the NFL decided to start a new franchise and suspend play for the Browns for a short time. The new franchise ended up being based out of Baltimore and would be known as the Baltimore Ravens.
The start of the Ravens was an interesting one, as they were different from any other expansion team. Despite the fact that they were considered an entirely new team, they kept all of the contracts that were owned by the Browns. This included players and staff members. The Ravens did keep a large number of players, but many of the pieces of the Cleveland Browns franchise did not head to Baltimore with the ...
... team.
The first draft of the franchise really set the tone for what the team would be about. Their first two draft picks were Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis. These picks would end up being cornerstones on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Each of these players has had a time in their career where they were considered to be the best player available at their respective positions.
The first year did not bring much success to the Ravens. They managed only 4 wins on the season. The team did improve slightly over the next few years, but still was not a playoff caliber team. The turnaround came in 1999.
The team started off with a poor 3-6 record but managed to finish 8-8 on the season. Although they did not make the playoffs that year, they did gain momentum for the franchise. That momentum entering the 2000 season was exactly what the franchise needed to find success that had never been seen in Baltimore.
The team became one of the most feared defenses in the history of the NFL in 2000. Their linebacker, Ray Lewis, led a defense that would only surrender 165 points on the season. With such a stellar defense the team was able to overcome offensive woes and make their first playoff appearance.
The playoffs treated the team well and their defense remained tough. The Ravens cruised through the first several round. No team managed to score more than 10 points against the Ravens before the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl was ultimately the most convincing victory of them all. The Giants could not do anything on either side of the ball and lost 34-7. This marked the first and only Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
The team has since become a perennial contender. They made the playoffs 6 times from 2000-2009 and have put one of the best defenses in the league on the field each season. The team is now led by a promising young quarterback and has a chance to go back to the top of the league.
