Sea Cow - Du Gong
The A & N Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, are known for their pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, and diverse marine life. Among the many species that call these islands home, one stands out for its unique appearance and gentle nature – the dugong.
Also known as the “sea cow”, the dugong is a large marine mammal that is closely related to the manatee. It is a herbivorous animal, feeding on sea-grass and other marine plants. The dugong is a slow-moving creature, often seen grazing on the seabed, using its flippers to dig up the sea-grass.
The A & N Islands are one of the few places in the world where the dugong can be found in its natural habitat. These islands provide the perfect environment for the dugong to thrive, with their shallow and calm waters, abundant sea-grass beds, and protection from predators.
The dugong has a significant cultural and ecological importance in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It is considered a sacred animal by the indigenous tribes of the islands, who have lived in harmony with the dugong for centuries. The tribes believe that the dugong is a symbol ...
... of good luck and prosperity, and its presence is essential for the balance of the ecosystem.
The dugong is also a vital part of the marine ecosystem in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. As a herbivore, it plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of sea-grass beds, which are essential for the survival of many other marine species. The dugong’s grazing helps to keep the sea-grass beds short, allowing new shoots to grow and providing a habitat for small fish and other marine creatures.
However, despite its cultural and ecological significance, the dugong population in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is facing threats. The main threat to the dugong is the destruction of its habitat. Sea-grass beds are being damaged due to coastal development, pollution, and destructive fishing practices. This has led to a decline in the dugong population, making it an endangered species.
