Regular Visits To The Veterinarian – Essential
Every person who loves their pet(s) understands that feeding them, sheltering them from the elements, and loving them, is important, but it is not enough. It is equally important to make sure you take your cat or dog, even a more exotic pet, to the veterinarians of your choice for the all-important pet wellness testing and exams that they need to ensure they are 100% fit and healthy. Of course if, during such visits, the veterinarian establishes that the animal needs better health monitoring, medication, or even surgery, then it can be scheduled and the problem hopefully taken care of.
THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS TESTING
Routine visits to the veterinarian are essential to ensure that pets enjoy ongoing good health. Just like humans should go for checkups with their GP or a specialist from time to time to ensure they are healthy, pets should be afforded the same opportunity to be taken to the veterinarian who will either give them a clean bill of health or alert the owner to potential health problems that the pet may silently be suffering from, or could become a victim of sometime in the future.
So, even ...
... if your cat or dog appears to be in perfect health and shows no sign of being sick, or signs such as lethargy, or slower than usual movement, for example, do not skip their bi-annual or yearly visit to the veterinarian who performs pet wellness testing and exams. You will only be doing your pet – and yourself – a great favor by taking them for these tests from time to time so that early intervention, in the case of a developing medical issue, can address the problem early on.
This is also a good time to ask the veterinarian any questions you may have about your pet’s general well-being and to find out if there are any suggestions about what you could do to make the pet’s life even better. You can get information about their diet, about what is best for the breed, and what foods to avoid. This is also the perfect opportunity to find out more about, say, the dog’s exercise routine; cats, by their very nature, walk around and run as much as they need to as they are, generally, freer to move around.
During these wellness exams, the veterinarian will also administer those all-important vaccinations that pets need from time to time. It is a time to gather as much good information about your pet’s health and how to help it maintain this health so that they are happier and healthier for longer.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PET WELLNESS TESTING AND EXAM PROCEDURES?
The veterinarian and their assistant(s) will always ascertain all important details about your pet’s medical history (if they do not already have this record information), and they will ask you questions about the pet’s general behavior that may be worrying you, they will ask questions about issues such as appetite and thirst patterns, about their urination and related issues. Thereafter a proper medical exam follows.
THE MEDICAL EXAM FOR YOUR PET
• The vet will weigh the animal and check its stance and movement to see if there is any cause for concern.
• The vet will listen to the pet’s heart and lungs to make sure there are no irregularities.
• The skin will be checked for ticks, other parasites, bald patches, dandruff, or dry areas.
• The vet checks for lumps.
• Eyes are checked for signs of redness and ears are examined for infection, polyps, and excessive wax.
• Teeth will be checked for signs of decay or damage and the vet will feel the pet’s abdomen for signs of irregularity with organs, for swelling, and for signs of discomfort.
The above is included in every good wellness exam to make sure your pet is in general good health. Every owner should schedule visits with the vet to make sure any problems are detected early on.
