How To Make A Boho-style Room?
A variety of textures
Bohemian or boho is definitely one of the most popular decoration styles in the world and eclectic by nature. There are no rules when it comes to boho décor. Textiles, carpets, and cushions can be easily mixed and combined with different patterns, shapes and scales, in bohemianism “more is more”.
Layering patterns is a simple and cost-effective way to add an unconventional style to your room. Start by bringing various items into the space, and get a feel for what can go where, if you feel there’s too much, you can always re-arrange and take elements out. Layered Persian rugs and woven cotton rugs are also a great way to add a bohemian flair to the floor.
Furniture
Using vintage pieces or upcycled items is a great way to channel eclecticism into any space, and boho rooms are no different. Taking inspiration from the mid-century modern era as well as the hippy culture of the 60’s and 70’s will help you achieve a successful boho scheme.
For example, a mid-century arc lamp mixed with a tribal print rug and a gallery wall of magazine covers from the 1970s will achieve ...
... the look flawlessly. The furniture selection for a boho room should offer a quirkiness, putting items together which you wouldn’t typically, in a boho scheme being ridged is not welcome, it’s about freedom and expressing this.
However, there are ways in which you can keep an underlying consistency in your boho living room, such as using mainly the same colour palette for the furniture but introducing colour through bolder accessories, this will prevent any clashing patterns and colours from looking too much.
Keep It Neutral
Bohemian design doesn’t have to mean cramming multiple bright colours into your space and hoping for the best. You can show constraint with your boho design and opt for incorporating colour through greenery and natural materials. The use of natural stone tables and organic vases will add a sophisticated style to your living room.
Don't Use Too Much Black
If you want to channel boho into your living room, try and swerve any local pieces in dark colours such as black or dark wood, these colours tend to be heavy, whereas boho is all about natural colours, such as bleached woods, as these provide a much airier natural atmosphere.
Using lighter colours as the foundation for your boho living room will provide you with a blank canvas which you can populate with colour, patterns and textures. You can use darker elements to anchor the room, but too much dark and you will end up with a more industrial-style interior.
Get Inspired by Nature
The more plants the better, when it comes to boho. I have yet to see a photo of a proclaimed boho room that does not have at least 3 plants. Not only do plants bring colour to a scheme and a natural feel. It has been proven that using plants within interiors has a positive impact on our well-being.
So, when designing your boho living room, ensure you bring the outside in, by including plenty of plants. Embracing the natural world is central to this style, once you’ve selected your plants, you can have fun choosing funky planters to sit them in, so why not incorporate some hanging plants to create a creative focal point of the room?
Plants bring vibrancy and improve air quality. Philodendrons and peace lilies can withstand various temperatures and need little maintenance or opt for succulents which come in various colours and textures, these plants do need occasional watering and sunlight but offer the perfect windowsill feature.
Lighting and Accessories
Your bohemian living room should provide an ambient atmosphere while being calm and welcoming. Instead of opting for overhead lighting, use table lamps, lanterns and candles to provide a more subtle effect. You can mix and match various lamp styles to give a uniqueness.
Boho is all about bringing out your creative flare, adding personal touches through family heirlooms, handmade items, and objects from your travels. Feature what you love: tapestries, vintage bottles, maps, or mismatched china—you name it.
Just because boho tends to be eclectic and understated, doesn’t mean it can’t offer chic and glamorous vibes too. Don’t be afraid to incorporate that ornate gold mirror or luxurious chandelier.
Go Casual
Perhaps the most important tip to mention when designing your boho living room is to keep it casual, remember your space should be as individual as you are. Don't be afraid to try out different options and see what works best for you and for your space.
Boho interiors should be informal and inviting, don’t worry about everything having its place, it’s supposed to be casual, think draping blankets over your sofa, as opposed to folding them neatly. Abstract paintings or simple line drawings in various-sized mismatched frames will offer a laid-back approach.
You’re living room should make visitors instantly relax, not make them feel on edge or like they can’t touch anything.
