Communication is a main part in our daily life, and it is a basic part in every relationships. But many people misunderstand this word by considering it as speaking, when it is not true.

Think of it. What kind of people you act while you are communicating with other people? Are you talking all the time and not caring about other people's feeling and emotions? Or are you just keep listening while other's talking?

Actually talking and listening should be of equal importance. But a good listening skill may hold the key to a successful relationship.

It seems that we are listening to others talking all the time, while we are discussing with others, communicating in phones, and talking with our family members and friends. But why are there still some theories insist that we should learn to listen? How to be an effective listener?

Before you start your conversation, you have to clear up your mind of any subjective notions or prejudices. You don't have to be in a hurry to say what you think of other's words. Please be patient in listening. Give time to the speaker to finish talking about what he wishes ...

Instead, nod your head in instances that you absorbed what the other is saying. You may also use words such as ‘I see', ‘I understand', or even just ‘yes' or ‘no'.

Eye contact is also very important. Give some eye contacts to people who are talking to you showing that you are listening to him, which is also an encouragement to him. Besides, there is nothing more distracting and dismissive than people who will not look you in the eye when you are sharing something you are passionate about.

Take care to the emotions that speakers are trying to express through words and gestures. This means that one has to pay close attention both to the speaker's voice (and how it is being used) and to their body language as well. So how can a one develop a better listening skill? Listening actually involves 3 processes: hearing, understanding and analysis. It requires conscious effort, contrary to what a lot of people seem to believe. A person who has mastered the listening skill is very well aware of both the verbal and emotional information that is being communicated during the conversation.

Well. To be a good listener is not so easy as we thought before, but we can also handle it by practicing more. Listen effectively will be of great help in our daily communication. To communicate correctly will reduce misunderstanding in our daily life. A good listening skill is the essential skill in effective communication.
