It's no surprise that Atlanta has several fascinating historical sites, given its rich and complex history. As Georgia's capital, there are many famous places to visit near Atlanta that provide a unique perspective on the city's history.

In no particular order, here are nine Georgia state historic sites to visit if you're visiting Atlanta, Georgia:

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site
For Americans interested in American history, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta is a must-see. This site includes restored sites important to understanding Dr. King's life. Visitors can also see Dr. King's and Coretta Scott King's tombs.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site commemorates the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and activist from 1955 to 1968. The park is well-known for its ranger-led programs, which include walking tours, films, and discussions. There is also an interactive exhibit called "The Dream Remembered," which chronicles Dr. King's life and work.

Dr. King's childhood home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was baptized, ...
... ordained, and served as co-pastor with his father, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial are all part of the park. The Center for Nonviolent Social Change ("The King Center"), founded by his widow, Coretta Scott King, is also included.

National Center for Civil and Human Rights
The National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta is a significant museum that chronicles the American Civil Rights Movement as well as the global struggle for human rights. The museum, which is located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, inspires people to use their power to change the world around them.

The Center's influential exhibitions include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s papers and artifacts, the history of the civil rights movement in the United States, and stories from the global struggle for human rights today. Exhibits in the American Civil Rights section include the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington.

Exhibits in the global human rights section cover topics such as the Holocaust, apartheid, and women's rights. Both sections of the museum have interactive exhibits where visitors can learn about these topics firsthand. Visitors can, for example, sit in a replica of a segregated bus or walk across the Selma Bridge during the Voting Rights Campaign.
The museum also has a number of films available for viewing, including a documentary about Nelson Mandela's life.

Atlanta History Center
The Atlanta History Center is a history museum and research center in Atlanta, Georgia's Buckhead neighborhood. The campus includes the Atlanta History Museum, one of the country's largest history museums, as well as the Swan House plantation, three historic homes, a new civil rights gallery, and a library.

Citizens interested in preserving the city's history founded the Atlanta History Center in 1926. The Atlanta History Museum has grown into a large, archival-oriented historical society with 33,000 permanent and temporary exhibitions about Atlanta's history over the years. The Museum first opened to the public in 1931 and has since been expanded several times.

The Atlanta History Center operates historic properties such as the Swan House, Tullie Smith Farm, Centennial Olympic Park, and six landmark neighborhoods in addition to the Museum and Research Center. The Atlanta History Center offers various walking tours and is a great place to learn about the city's rich history.

Fox Theatre
The Fox Theatre, which opened in 1929, is a historic landmark in Atlanta and one of the Georgia state historic sites. The theatre was built to show first-run movies and live stage shows, and it quickly became one of the city's most popular entertainment venues. During the 1920s, Atlanta experienced a construction boom, which contributed to the city's rich history. A developer saw an opportunity to construct a grand movie theater worthy of New York or Hollywood.

The Fox Theatre was an instant success, attracting celebrities and socialites from across the country. The theatre hosted numerous first-run films and live stage shows during its heyday, including appearances by Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Mae West, and others. Unfortunately, the Fox, like many other historical landmarks, fell into disrepair in the latter half of the twentieth century.

However, in 1975, a multimillion-dollar restoration effort led by dedicated preservationists restored the Fox to its former glory. The Fox Theatre is still a popular destination for Atlanta residents and visitors today, hosting a variety of theatrical productions, concerts, and special events.

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum
The National Archives and Records Administration manages fourteen Presidential Libraries, including the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta. The Carter Library houses records from his presidency, which lasted from 1977 to 1981, as well as material from his post-presidential career.

The Library also houses a museum with exhibits on Carter's life and presidency, in addition to archival materials. The mission of the library, which opened in 1986, is "to preserve and provide access to presidential records and papers relating to former President Jimmy Carter's administration and post-presidential activities in order to foster scholarship and public policy discussion."
To that end, the library makes its holdings available for research through a continuous series of public programs, exhibitions, conferences, and publications. This cutting-edge facility provides visitors with an immersive experience that brings President Carter's story to life.

World of Coca-Cola
If you like Coca-Cola, you should go to the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta. This museum in downtown Atlanta displays some of the most well-known Coca-Cola memorabilia. Visitors can not only look at the cool displays but also try some of the products, thanks to vintage ads and unique bottles.

Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 as a headache and fatigue remedy by an Atlanta pharmacist named John Pemberton. Because of its distinct flavor, it quickly became a popular beverage in Atlanta soda fountains.
As demand for the drink grew, Pemberton formed a partnership with Asa Candler, who eventually bought the company outright in 1888. Coke is now one of the most recognizable brands in the world, with a presence in over 200 countries, thanks to Candler's leadership.

As part of the World of Coca-Cola, you can learn about the brand's history and impact on popular culture through various exhibits. The Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta features over 100 flavors from around the world, including Peach Tea from China and Lemon Tea from Vietnam.

Delta Flight Museum
One of the best places to learn about aviation is the Delta Flight Museum, which is housed in two historic hangars in Atlanta. Delta Air Lines began as a crop dusting operation in the 1920s. The museum houses a fleet of iconic aircraft, including the Boeing 747, Douglas DC-3, and Lockheed Constellation.

The Delta Flight Museum is located at Candler Field airport in Atlanta, which served as Delta's first headquarters. Hangar 2 was built in 1939 to house Delta's growing fleet as it expanded its fleet in 1929, while Hangar 1 was built a few years later in 1941. Delta moved its headquarters to Candler Field's new terminal building in 1955.

Candler Field was renamed Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport in 1963, and it is still Delta's hub today. Visitors can choose between a self-guided tour and a guided tour led by a knowledgeable docent. They will undoubtedly gain an appreciation for aviation history and possibly gain insight into what makes Delta successful.

If you're an aviation enthusiast or simply looking for something new to do in Atlanta, the Delta Flight Museum should be on your list of places to visit. From its rich history to its impressive collection of aircraft, the museum has something for everyone—and it just might make you appreciate air travel on a whole new level.

High Museum of Art
