Windows
All windows should be fitted to compulsory British Standards, for an enhanced security. Double glazing and laminated glass is also recommended, as these are harder to break. Windows with key operated locks that are displayed clearly may also put burglars off from attempting a break in. Keep any valuable items away from outside view and close curtains and blinds at night.
Doors
Also ensure all doors are fitted to required British Standards, and that they all have deadlocks. Those made from wood can often be made stronger with steel strips which are fitted to the frame and around the area of the lock. It is a good idea to install a chain or a latch, and a viewer peephole so you can see who is at the door before opening it. Make sure you keep any keys well away from any entrance doors as burglars can easily use a wire through the letterbox to hook onto them. Lock all doors and windows when away from home or at night, including any leading from a connected garage into your house.
CCTV Cameras
Although not essential, CCTV cameras can be installed as a last resort or generally for extra security. ...
... Nowadays, they can be affordable, non intrusive and easy to install.
Garden
Planting shrubs with thorns around the borders of your home can make it harder for an intruder to gain access. It may also be a good idea to place spikes or special barbed wire on top of any walls surrounding your garden. Ensure all gates or fences are strong, and plant tall trees to help block any possible access points. Trim back any hedges so that your property is not hidden from any view.
Burglar alarms
Burglar alarms can help to detect and raise an alert when an intruder breaks into your home. Many of them can be set up so that when it goes off, it sends a message to your mobile phone so that immediate action can be taken. Ensure that ‘bell boxes' are visible on your property as this may put potential burglars off from targeting your home. There are various types of burglar alarms on the market with special additional features for extra added security so it is well worth researching these.
Security lights
Security lights can be installed so that they turn on at night whenever movement is detected near to your property. This also deters burglars or vandals from committing the crime, as they will be more visible to you and any neighbours.
Automated timers
Use automated timers to switch on lamps or televisions whenever you are away on holiday. This helps create an illusion that someone is at home.
Be careful who you inform about your holidays
Never post on social networks or other websites that you will be away on holiday, as this means people will know the house may be unoccupied. Always tell a trusted neighbour to keep an eye out for you whilst you are not there.
