Laptops are nothing but portable computers. They are made to be carried around easily so that we can work while on the go. They have all the essential requirements which include a display, a touchpad or a mouse and a keyboard. The touchpad is also called as a track pad. They even have inbuilt speakers and sometimes even an inbuilt mic. It is run on a battery which is set on its back side. The battery generally may be of six cells or nine cells and has to be recharged at regular intervals to ensure uninterrupted power supply. The battery once charged will run for four five hours depending upon the type of settings you have chosen. They are usually 0.5 to 1.5 inches thick and weigh nearly about 3 to 15 pounds. The display screen ranges from 13 to 17 inches wide. Few years back they were bulky and used to weigh more due to enlarged batteries. They are opened by flipping them open. This mechanism also protects the keyboard and screen from getting damaged or dusty. When they are first put into markets they were considered to attract a small market. Only military, sales, accountants and IRS people were expected to use it. However ...
... it has conquered the markets today and nearly everyone uses it.

Due to the wide variety of Laptops available today in the market less and less people are using computers. They are mainly classified as following:

Notebooks: they are just 11 inches wide. This is because the width of a full keyboard is also 11 inches. They also have a touchpad beneath the keyboard. Initially notebooks were of A size, which is the size of paper. But then with technological advancement they were made to be of the same size as that of A4 paper. The new one was 11.7 inches wide which allowed the addition of one more column and made the screen broader.
Netbook: it is less than 11 inches thick and thus cannot incorporate a full size keyboard. Even the screen becomes smaller. This makes it less costly and lighter in weight. Also due to its small size it has limited facilities available in itself. Thus it is at a lower version of full size notebooks. And the less than full size keyboard is difficult to operate.
Ultra- thin notebooks: this is the newest range of notebooks which are ultra thin, almost as thick as a 100 page notebook.
Rugged notebooks: these are very expensive notebooks. They are specially made to work in any condition. It can absorb shocks and thus can sustain falls.

The most convenient and portable form of laptops are subnotebooks. They are usually referred to as ultraportable. Their main reason for such a huge market is its portability. They are just 13 inches wide and weigh maximum up to two kg. They are smart and light in weight. Even though they are small they have a battery life of 8 to 10 hours. They contain two USB ports and have smaller screen. The screen resolution is less.

With the advancement in laptop and notebooks the future of PCs today, seem bleak. Laptops due to their easy handling and almost the same capacity as that of computers have a brighter future. Future generations will lead to more and more usage of such portable devices.
