Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme: Transforming Agriculture In Andhra Pradesh
In 2017, the state government of Andhra Pradesh, under the leadership of former Chief Minister Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu, initiated the Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme. This ambitious project aimed to harness the waters of the Godavari River to facilitate agricultural and drinking water needs across the state. With the completion of its first phase by the end of the year, this scheme marked a significant milestone in the development of irrigation infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. The primary objective of the Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme is to provide a sustainable water supply for agricultural purposes, particularly benefiting impoverished farmers who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. Recognizing the challenges faced by low-production areas due to inadequate water supply, the government, in collaboration with top TDP leaders, launched the "Jalasiri Harati" scheme, encompassing 28 irrigation projects, including the Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme. By enhancing water flow to these fields, the soil quality is expected to improve, leading to more efficient and high-quality agricultural production. The benefits extend to impoverished communities, promoting income equality and contributing to poverty reduction in various regions of Andhra Pradesh. The Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme operates in two phases, with the first phase completed by the TDP government. On Independence Day, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the scheme by switching on the pumps, marking a symbolic moment for the state. Under this scheme, water lifted from the Godavari River serves both agricultural and drinking purposes, addressing the dual needs of the communities in the region.
Implemented in the areas adjacent to the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, the scheme benefits approximately 2.15 lac acres of land. Districts such as Rajanagaram, Pithapuram, Peddapuram, Jaggampeta, and Prattipadu are among the main areas covered. Additionally, nearly 20,000 acres of land around the Polavaram Canal are connected to this scheme, contributing to enhanced irrigation in these regions. The Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme stands as a testament to the commitment of the Andhra Pradesh government, particularly under the leadership of N Chandrababu Naidu, to uplift agricultural communities and transform the state's primary sector. As one of the top achievements of the TDP government, this scheme holds the promise of continued benefits for years to come, fostering agricultural growth, ensuring water security, and contributing to the overall development of Andhra Pradesh.
