Arkema, a worldwide specialty materials firm, invested in sodium-ion battery startup Tiamat. This venture aims to accelerate the development of sodium-ion battery alternatives to lithium. Arkema's strategic decision supports its goal of being a leading battery materials company with a wide range of products for different energy storage technologies.

Tiamat, a 2017 CNRS spin-off, designs, develops, industrializes, and markets sodium-ion batteries. This alternative to lithium batteries addresses lithium supply chain issues. Strategic investors Stellantis Ventures and MBDA joined Arkema in Tiamat's €22 million funding round.

Tiamat plans to build a 5 GWh sodium-ion battery cell Gigafactory in France with French government and EU funding. By 2025, the initial phase might produce 0.7 GWh and provide 1,000 jobs.

Arkema's Chief Technology Officer, Armand AJDARI, stressed Tiamat's sodium-ion technology's role in lowering lithium and other strategic metal reliance. Arkema's objective of developing sustainable materials is supported by the funding.
