Premenstrual syndrome is a syndrome that occurs in a woman within 2 to 14 days of the onset of periodic cycle. The real cause for PMS is still an enigma. It is because of its diversified symptoms it is hard to determine the exact cause of Premenstrual syndrome. Family history is often considered to be a probable factor contributing to Premenstrual syndrome. Other factors leading to the onset of Premenstrual syndrome are intake of caffeine in high level, usage of tobacco. Stress can also precipitate such condition. So it is common among those having history of depression and bipolar disorder. Increase in age and dietary imbalance can induce this condition. If the diet is low in minerals like manganese, magnesium etc and Vitamins like vitamin E and vitamin B then it can be a resulting factor for PMS. However, most scientists believe that PMS results due to alteration in brain chemical and sex hormone. Some also like to believe that PMS is not related to psychological disorder.

Once PMS is firmly diagnosed there are several ways of treating it. The cure to it is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise can help a lot. If the patient is a smoker she should immediately quit smoking and take the help of a medical professional to treat this as soon as possible.
