In a world where every day seems to bring a new challenge, it's heartening to see communities come together to support those in need. As we dive into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, cannabis companies and breast cancer organizations are joining forces to make a significant impact. The statistics are sobering - according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year, 240,000 women and 2,100 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. Tragically, an estimated 42,000 women and 500 men lose their lives to this disease.

Breast cancer diagnoses can result from a variety of factors, including age, genetic mutations, and family history. Treatment options range from surgery to chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, depending on the type of cancer and its stage.

One element that has offered relief to many battling breast cancer is cannabis. While it's not a direct treatment for the disease, cannabis has been found to alleviate symptoms and side effects. According to Breastcancer.org, a survey revealed that 42% of breast cancer patients use medical cannabis to manage the side effects of their ...
... treatments. This diverse group of patients found cannabis to be "very" or "extremely" helpful in their journey.

Cannabis Companies Extend a Helping Hand

Supporting breast cancer patients is a shared goal of numerous organizations. Some cannabis businesses have stepped up to the plate, partnering with these organizations to provide both financial assistance and hope to those affected.

For example, Mint Cannabis in Tempe, Arizona, partnered with Check for a Lump to offer free mammograms to locals, recognizing the challenges that cancer screenings faced during the pandemic.

Clovr Cannabis in Missouri launched the "Bonbons for Boobies" campaign, offering limited-time pink raspberry caramel chocolates, with proceeds benefiting breast cancer patients and BraCoutureKC.

Verano, a multi-state operator, announced its third annual breast cancer support campaign, benefiting the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation. Throughout October, they will hold numerous fundraising opportunities to collect funds for patients.

Tilt Holdings, the owner of the Jupiter vape brand, partnered with the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, donating $5 for every Jupiterâ„¢ Pink Ceramic Mouth Tip cartridge sold to support breast cancer patients in Pennsylvania.

Sunmed, a Florida-based CBD company, pledged to donate 3% of online product sales in October to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF), which will be used for early detection services, education, and support.

CMS Gardens, a Rhode Island-based cultivator and solventless extraction artist, launched a "Doobies For Boobies" campaign, donating a percentage of proceeds to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

These are just a few examples of cannabis companies taking meaningful steps to support breast cancer patients. Many more may announce their initiatives as the month unfolds.

The Power of Evidence

As breast cancer patients undergo treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, they often grapple with symptoms like pain, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and vomiting. Cannabis has shown promise in alleviating these symptoms.

Marisa C. Weiss, founder and chief medical officer of Breastcancer.org, highlighted how cannabis can help patients in a 2020 interview. She emphasized the debilitating nature of peripheral neuropathy, a common side effect of chemotherapy. Many patients resort to cannabis for relief but may be hesitant to discuss it with their doctors.

Research supports the use of medical cannabis in alleviating cancer-related symptoms. A 2021 study found that it helped reduce pain in patients with various cancers, including breast cancer.

Excitingly, on September 27, 2023, researchers at the UF Health Center and University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center received a $3.2 million award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study the benefits and risks of medical cannabis in cancer patients. The study aims to provide valuable insights into medical cannabis usage and its potential to target and modulate the inflammatory pathway.

In the face of adversity, it's heartening to witness the unity of cannabis companies and breast cancer organizations. Together, they are making a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients, raising awareness, offering support, and advancing research. As we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let's applaud these efforts and continue to support those in need.
