By 1984, the World Series of Poker had built a reputation of bringing exciting, dramatic tournaments to the game of poker. For years the tournament had been an attraction for the best players around the world to get together to put their skills up against the test. The 1984 World Series of Poker was no different in the excitement and quality of play that it had to offer.

The field of players that would take on each other and the prize money available to those players was the highest total that the tournament had ever seen to that point. The tournament included several former World Series of Poker Champions and all were seeking the prize of more than 1.3 million dollars available.

Each year the tournament sends home some of the best players in the world in the early rounds of play. In order to win at poker you have to have good cards. Sometimes the best players in the world simply do not get the cards necessary to keep progressing in the tournament. By the end of the first day the field was reduced dramatically. An amazing total of 60 players were eliminated in the first day, leaving just 72 players remaining to ...
... duke it out during day two.

The second day continued to weed out the number of people in the competition at a rapid pace. Out of the remaining 72 players in the tournament entering the day, 45 of them were eliminated. That left just 27 players to compete for the huge prize. Within the first two days there were 6 former champions of the tournament that were not able to stay around for the third day of play.

Day three continued to bring the crazy pace of players dropping out of the tournament. Two thirds of the players in the field were eliminated during day three, cutting the field to the tiny number of 9 players. This elimination included the dropping out of every single former World Series of Poker champion. The previous year featured a new champion, but several of the final contestants were former champions. This year would be a test of many players that were having a shot at seeing the highest level of success for the first time.

In the previous year of play there was a large discrepancy of money between the top players left remaining. This year provided a tight matchup between a few of the players, making for a lot of excitement as the day drew to a close. The final field began to crumble before Jack Keller and Bryon Wolford. These two players were the last two standing.

Jack Keller saw an opportunity to put away his opponent and stepped in with an aggressive approach. Though it was risky, it paid off and he was able to take out Bryon Wolford at the final table. By taking out Bryon Wolford Keller became the 1984 World Series of Poker champion. He brought home the all-time record pot of more than 1.3 million dollars.
