Almost every person eventually gets a fairly deep cut. Even though these cuts do not usually involve the face, are less than twelve inches long and are not heavily bleeding, can be easily treated at home. However, there are a few precautions which you must keep in mind to treat the wound carefully. To find out what you can do to ensure complete healing and lower the risk of infection are listed below. So without any further adieu, let's read until the end.
Steps to Follow Treating a Deep-Cut Wound
Step 1: Stop the Bleeding
The first thing you need to do to treat a serious cut is to stop the bleeding. You must focus on applying direct pressure using a fresh piece of cotton, tissue or gauze from the first aid box. You need to push the material firmly as it will help in stopping the wound. Even if you think that the material has soaked too much blood and you should remove it, wait. Instead, you must keep applying pressure or simply lift the limb or the finger upwards to lessen the bleeding.
Step 2: Clean the Wounded Area
In the second step, you ...
... need to focus on wound cleaning. Make sure to wash your hands after the bleeding has stopped and then proceed with the cleaning. As you do this, it will lessen the chance of infection and prevent the dangerous bacteria from entering or getting stuck inside. Now take warm water and any disinfectant or a good quality soap to clean it. Lastly, rinse gently to avoid any further discomfort.
Step 3: Apply Ointment
After the wound cleaning has been done, you need to ensure the affected area is protected. For this purpose, you must focus on keeping the area moist and lessen the chance of scarring. Therefore, you can apply a thin coating of any antibiotic ointment if present or you can also choose to apply petroleum jelly. Once done, you can cover the wound to prevent it from attracting dust or other pollutants.
Step 4: Change the Dressing
If you think that the wound is draining, then it is important to change the dressing. For this, make sure to clean your hands before cleaning the wound. Then apply ointments and cover the wound again using clean cotton and gauze. Once you find the wound getting dry, then you should know that it is healing. Therefore, you can continue with changing the dressing just once throughout the day.
Step 5: Seek Medical Attention
Your wound may not seem too serious in the beginning. But there may be times when you must seek medical attention. In case of deep cuts and severe bleeding, do not hesitate to call 911. Other situations which indicate that you need serious medical attention are

Injury on the face
Animal bite
Developing signs of infection
Not received any shot of tetanus in the past five years
Numbness in the affected area
