Waymo, on the other hand, maintains around 250 autonomous vehicles in SF, approximately 22% more than Cruise's fleet in the city.

On October 2, a Cruise robotaxi became entangled in an incident when a pedestrian was hit by a human-driven car and ended up trapped beneath the autonomous vehicle.

Video footage captured by Cruise itself and later viewed by one of the leading news reporting sites shows the robotaxi braking abruptly as it encountered the injured pedestrian in the street. The unfortunate sequence began when the pedestrian was struck by a human-driven car, launching them in front of the autonomous vehicle. Despite the robotaxi's aggressive braking, it could not avoid running over the pedestrian, who was pinned beneath the car.

However, according to some reports, it's essential to note that according to Cruise's account of the events, the initial impact was not their fault. An investigation will undoubtedly show whether the autonomous vehicle could have swerved to avoid the pedestrian entirely.
