Travel Insurance is a mandatory component of any foreign travel. Be it for tourism, business, or a student travelling abroad to get an education. Though they are all called by the same name, they have certain basic differences in the coverages offered and the inclusions and exclusions.

Keep reading to discover these differences, what benefits one might get as a student traveller, and which is the best student travel insurance.

What is travel insurance?

This type of insurance is a protection offered to travellers to ensure their well-being and financial security. This is because foreign travel is expensive and brings several risks that can negatively impact your travel experience, whether to explore the world or get quality higher education in your field of choice.

Here are a few circumstances where having insurance while travelling can protect you from the after-effects.

Loss of checked-in baggage
Missing connecting flight
Trip Delay or Cancellation
Losing one’s passport
Medical Emergency
Accidents

Student travel insurance acts as an extension to the ...
... insurance for regular travellers, offering plans containing coverages specially designed for students travelling abroad on top of the one for regular travellers.

What are the differences between student insurance and the one offered to regular travellers?

The main difference between student and regular travelers' insurance is that certain additional coverages are offered to students, as the policy duration for regular travellers might be short. Still, for students, these policies cover the entire duration of their studies.

While these coverages might differ from insurer to insurer, here are a few additional coverages you can opt for when travelling abroad for higher education.

Study interruption:

This is one of the special benefits offered by the insurer as it protects from loss of fees in case of hospitalisation or disability of the student or immediate family.

Sponsor protection:

It is usually the parents who sponsor foreign education for students, and this coverage offers protection in case of any permanent disability or death of the sponsor.

Complete pre-existing disease cover:

Countries like the US require pre-existing diseases covered by insurance, and having this coverage can not only allow them to enter the country and avail education, but it can also protect the student’s well-being.

What is the best insurance provider for both general and student travel insurance?

Over the years, I have purchased general travel insurance several times to go on foreign visits with my family. However, recently, I also got the experience of buying insurance for my son, who got admitted to an Ivy League School.

I opted for the same insurance provider I have chosen for my other travels, Niva Bupa. They offered these coverages along with the other general coverages at a very reasonable rate while offering an excellent claim settlement ratio and more. In my experience, Niva Bupa provides the best student travel insurance and general insurance for travellers.
Steps to buying insurance for students

Choosing the right insurance for your children can help protect them when you are not there to do so yourself. Here are the steps you can follow to buy insurance for your children.

Visit the Niva Bupa Website and click on Travel Insurance in the header
In the form, click on the round box next to ‘student travel’ to select it.

Enter the requested details, including destination country, education duration, leaving date, and phone number.
After filing the details, click ‘view plans’ and fill in the traveler details on the next page.

After this, use the ‘+’ and ‘-’ symbols to increase or decrease the sum insured, select basic or comprehensive coverage, choose any add-ons you want, and continue once you agree with the premium price.
Once that is done, input all the required information and share the relevant documents to purchase the policy.
Once approved, you will receive an email with the policy details.
Conclusion
There are a lot of countries where student travel insurance plans are mandatory, and choosing the right one can make the difference in getting appropriate coverage and give peace of mind to both you, the parent, and your child while they are exploring this new phase of their life.
